Foreword
The descriptions and service procedures contained in this manual are based on designs
and methods studies carried out up to April 2006.

The products are under continuous development. Vehicles and components produced
after the above date may therefore have different specifications and repair methods.
When this is judged to have a significant bearing on this manual, supplementary service
bulletins will be issued to cover the changes.

The new edition of this manual will update the changes.

In service procedures where the title incorporates an operation number, this is a
reference to V.S.T. (Volvo Standard Times).

Service procedures which do not include an operation number in the title are for general
information and no reference is made to V.S.T.

The following levels of observations, cautions and warnings are used in this Service
Documentation:

Note: Indicates a procedure, practice, or condition that must be followed in order to have
the vehicle or component function in the manner intended.

Caution: Indicates an unsafe practice where damage to the product could occur.
Warning: Indicates an unsafe practice where personal injury or severe damage to the
product could occur.

Danger: Indicates an unsafe practice where serious personal injury or death could occur.

Group 38 Fault codes tachograph Malfunction

Malfunction
Tachograph, fault codes, general information
When there is an fault in the tachograph system, a fault
code is normally stored in the tachograph unit. The driver
is advised by a warning lamp lighting on the instrument
panel.

T3017530

When the fault is active, a fault code is shown on the

tachograph display. The fault codes do not conform to the
same standard as those for the vehicle’s other control
units.

T3017893

Error messages for fault codes are shown as follows:

1 Pictograms or pictogram combinations (specified

in accordance with legal requirements)
2 Informative text
3 Fault code number

The background flashes for 30 seconds or until a

button is pressed.

To read off and check the fault codes shown on the

tachograph display, refer toFunction Group 3835,
Information type Diagnostics, Tachograph, fault code
table.

Many faults will also be indicated by a fault code on the

instrument panel or can be read via the diagnostics tool.
These fault codes conform to the same standard as
those for the vehicle’s other control units. This fault code
document describes fault tracing with the aid of these fault
codes. For optimal fault tracing, however, it may be best
to use both the fault code documents.

Note: When a fault code is erased on the instrument

panel or via the diagnostics tool, the equivalent fault code
is also erased in the tachograph, and vice versa. Thus
the same fault code does not need to be erased in both
places.

Note: The fault codes are used as indicators when

troubleshooting. This does not mean that the tachograph
needs automatically to be changed if there are fault codes
stored.
