INDIVIDUAL REFLECTION ESSAY

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an illness that usually attacked respiratory system.


The infected people with the COVID-19 virus will tend to get a mild to moderate respiratory

illness and recover can recover without special treatment. Unless for the older people, and
those who are having medical problems like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and
chronic respiratory disease are more likely to tend to get serious illness. The disease was
first reported in the late of year 2019 in Wuhan China and the number of cases has been
rapidly increase affecting other part of China. Due to the rapid increase in the number of
cases affecting substantial number of people outside China, it has considered as pandemic.
Last updated on 1st July 2020, the number of people infected globally has reached
10,819,762 with 519,272 deaths. The regions that has been affected such as Japan, Europe,
South Korea, United States, United Kingdom, including our country, Malaysia.
The first case reported in Malaysia was on Jan 24 th, sources from WHO, involving
three China tourists who had entered the country from Singapore on Jan 23 th and since then
the number of people infected has been increased more than 8000 with resulting 121 deaths
according to the statistic provided by Worldometer Info. The government had imposed
Movement Control Order (MCO) whereby non-essential industries are forced to closed to
break the chain of infection. As COVID-19 spread around the globe, many areas of one’s
daily life such as work and education are being affected. The most affected sectors in
Malaysia is oil and gas, accommodation, tourism and other export industries. Although the
decision made by government to close the non-essential industries can disrupt the business
and economy in Malaysia. However, this is an effective way to control the spread of the virus
and also to protect the staffs from getting infected by the virus.
Human resource management in every organization is playing an important role
because it is a part of their responsibilities to ensure the safety, health and welfare of
everyone in the organization to maintain the efficiency of the employees to deliver their work.
One of the ways to maintain the efficiency of the employees is by providing more flexibility.
Human Resources Management and the senior manager should encourage the employees
to work from home. The best step for organization is to have an open conversation between
managers and employees on how work can be completed and done without pushing and
interrupt on employees’ privacy and offer a variety options of flexibility, including extra
flexibility when the task need to be submitted or giving employee to adjust their daily work
time per day to allow employees to take care of their children and others. This is because
working from home can affect employees differently, it is depending on the situation and their
responsibilities. For example, during this pandemic situation, all the childcare and school are
closed and the workers with younger children need to balance their time by taking care of the

children and to keep up the job tasks. And also, for those employees who has responsibilities
to take of their parents. Hence, this order is very important to come from the top management
as not all managers are viewing the flexibility in a positive way. And the employees should
also give an active response by inform their managers on types of flexibility they need to
balance their work and home lives.
The second way to maintain the efficiency of the employees is by providing training for
online collaboration. With this pandemic situation, many employers are asking their
employees to work from home. The organization need to focus primarily on the work of how
teams can work well together, attend the productive meetings and perform the long-distance
task. The most effective way to perform during working online is an organization can offer
web-based sessions. During these sessions, leaders can establish the collaborative
technology and create awareness of person such as in communication, including preferences
for conference calls, phone calls and email. For example, by setting up the daily interactive
meetings. Employees need guidance to support them in managing their workloads
effectively. While some employees may find it difficult to focus on their work, or maybe lead
to overworked. The first thing an organization need to do starting in the morning is by having
a short call among the team, it is to keep each other team member up to date and reinforce
them to know the exact work they are doing every day. This is only for a quick one to keep
engage and efficiency of the team member.
The third way to maintain the efficiency of the employees is coping and supporting
each other during Covid-19 emergency situation. The pressure and the increase level of fear
due to this pandemic situation can create a major problem around us. An organization can
offer a variety of ways to support employee mental and physical health, from social activities
to gym memberships. But during this time, all the non-essentials industry is closed. However,
an organization can redirect their efforts to foster employee well-being. On the other hand, by
practicing mindfulness can help to focus the employees’ attention especially to their mental
health. By offering tutorials on mindfulness, an organization can suggest to have a simply go
for a walk to get a peace of mind.

In conclusion, the Covid-19 is a new disease that affect an economy and disrupt the
business around the world. The organization need to come out with the different ways to
overcome this situation and to prevent company from getting loss. The Human Resource
Management with the help and support of each member in the organization playing an

important role to maintain the effectiveness of work and maintain smooth business relations.
With each support from the team member, the company can go through this challenge.
