IV.KEY CONCEPTS:
The God Stealer – a short story by Filipino National Artist F. Sionil Jose. It is not just a
tale about an Ifugao stealing a religious idol, but also about the friendship that developed
between a Filipino and an American, a representation of the relationship that developed
between the “colonized” and “colonizer’. This is an example of a literary text which
applies the Cultural Studies approach,

The Fence – a story written by Jose Garcia Villa. It is a story that tackles forgiveness
between two neighbors- Aling Sebia and Aling Biang. This story applies the Moral-
Philosophical Approach.

"It takes one to know the real one"

Sam Christie Philip Latak

Bourgeoisie Proletariat

Gathers artifacts He stole his grandfather's Ifugao God

Ifugao people treated him well Ungrateful and disrespects his

grandfather

Promotion granted on Philip

Regrets and finally chose to stay in
the mountains

Explanation:

"It takes one to know the real one" will be the line since I believe that the suitable selection for "The God
Stealer" story is the Marxist approach. I must say that when we doubt someone and think negatively
about that person's future reflects on our attitude too. Saying the line "it takes one to know the real one"
is a way of supporting them since an individual who made the critique has flaws that are comparable to
those of the person who is being criticized. Sam Christie, a bourgeoisie, has been treated well by the
people of Ifugao by the reason of Sam, who has been gathering artifacts from these areas with each new
discovery, which he then manages to obtain regardless of his social level. On the other hand, Philip
Latak, a proletariat, stole his grandfather's Ifugao God since it is his way of thanking Sam Christie for his
granted promotion. He openly defies and disrespects his family and former religion because his material
reality has changed. Then, later on, he lives a more comfortable life in the city and with the help of Sam
has gotten a raise. He sees that reality as better he is grateful, grateful enough to forsake what his family
believes in.

IV.LEARNING ACTIVITIES:
B. Read the story “The Fence” on pp.31-36 of The Development of Philippine Literature in English
or from this link https://www.scribd.com and take note on the details of each element of the
story. Then do a graphical representation of your literary criticism and your explanation. Use the
rubrics below for scoring.

"Those who seek for forgiveness will certainly gain it."

Aling Sebia is not guilty and made no apologies Aling Biang has always been waiting for an apology
for her betrayal. from Aling Sebia and is still enraged by what occurred.

Pride and Hatred

Fence that the two

women created

Aling Sebia's Loathsomeness Swearing Unhealthy Iking

Child Environment

Prohibited to make a bond

The death of Iking

Explanation:

"Those who seek for forgiveness will certainly gain it" will be the line since I believe that the suitable
selection for "The Fence" story is the moral-philosophical approach. " Those who seek for forgiveness"
truly represents that when the other person makes an effort just to apologize really has a golden heart
because that person recognizes the mistake that they/she/he had done. In the story wherein two women
despises each other namely, Aling Sebia is not guilty and made no apologies for her betrayal and Aling
Biang has always been waiting for an apology from Aling Sebia and is still enraged by what occurred.
Proceeds to being fed up and losing theirselves which leads to throwing hate to one another then later
on, builds a fence that will surely separate them. I must say that if we just lower our pride and
understand deeper the misunderstadings will surely leads to a healthy environment and fruitful
friendship, then there will be no person harmed or hurt.

A. In the story, “The God Stealer’. Identify the power struggle of the two significant characters?
Don’t forget to mention who the characters are.

The power struggle in the story The God Stealer mainly centered on the cultures of the two main
characters, Philip Latak and Sam Christie. The rejection of Philip Latak's Ifugao ancestry might be
interpreted as a Filipino rejection of his origins in favor of colonial ideologies. Out of respect, Philip
replaces Sam with God. As a sign of gratitude, the Filipino offers the Americans the most valuable
emblem of his previous customs, sacrificing his roots in the process. Philip Latak looked up to Sam
Christie and his culture, envious of his way of life. Sam Christie, the other character, was fond of
collecting mementos from all around the world. Despite his understanding of its cultural
importance, he was able to receive it without difficulty because of his social status. Despite the fact
that he knew how important the Ifugao deity was to Philip's culture, he chose to open out to him.
He desired to amass keepsakes from many civilizations.

B. What do you think is the author’s purpose in writing the selection ?

I believe that the author’s purpose in writing the selection of the fence is to teach us that we should
be aware of every action that we make in order to not hurt or involve a person especially that is
close to us. I disagree with the statement "forgive and forget". I must say that we should not forgive
other people if they do not recognize their fault or did not yet apologize for what they did. We
cannot let their mistakes to us pass because I believe that we must right the wrongs so that we can
all move forward. Either apologizing in the simplest way by telling them "sorry" or to make an
action that says we are sorry for what we did because I agree with the statement "action speaks
louder than words". Moreover, it is our choice to cut off the relation to them or to create a whole
new fresh beginning.

C. What does the fence represent? Explain your answer.

The fence story represents the walls that hinder, separate even between loved ones such as those
two women who despise one another and lead their life to the utmost poisonous environment with
no peace of mind. By the reason of building the fence to separate themselves from each other. As I
stated previously in number two, if they are not guilty nor sorry for what they did, we have to make
them realize their fault in order for us to move forward in our lives and it is our choice to cut off
them to our life or to begin a fresh start. I must say that forgiveness is a means of resolving disputes
because hatred fuels the fires of vengeance and rage.
