Insect Farming in Hometown city

I come from a beautiful city in Indonesia called Bandung. Bandung city has
mountainous areas in its northern parts called Lembang. Lembang has a very cool climate,
especially in the mornings and evenings, therefore Lembang is very suitable for insect
farming. Moreover, Lembang has been an area where farmers grew their crops and also
raised their farm animals for many years, so I suppose it will be a suitable place for me to
settle my insect farm there.
Initially, I will develop grasshoppers and crickets in my farm since they are quite
possibly the most suitable (and least demanding) insects to develop, which is the insect chips.
They now have a crunchy surface at the primary spot, so I figure it will coordinate with the
objective item, which is the insect chips. These two insects are quite harmless (for the most
part don't convey illness and don't hurt people), so it will simplify the whole process. They
likewise have a delicious umami flavor in any case, even without preparing, so by adding
preparing, the flavor of my chips could be considerably more delectable. I will put more
noteworthy significance on crickets, since they have more prominent nutrients and minerals
contrasted with grasshoppers, at that point created with beetles subsequent to cultivating
crickets have effectively succeeded.
So, my plan is to make a great brand first using this cricket and grasshopper farm.
After that I'm likely to expand into cockroach farming for my “sambal” cockroach items.
Sambal is a spicy Indonesian chile paste with an extensive history in southeast Asia.
Cockroaches have always had a poor reputation in my city because they are thought to be
"dirty creatures" that walk around garbage and eat filthy food. Many ladies are terrified of
them, and some even wish to destroy them with their slippers as quickly as possible. Through
my cockroach sambal products, I hope to change people's minds about cockroaches, by
showing them that cockroaches can be safe and delicious. I need to establish credibility by
demonstrating that these cockroaches are not the filthy cockroaches they see in the corners of
their homes, but rather well-farmed cockroaches with licensed authorization and high quality
process.
First, I need to find and prepare the land to make this farm. Then, I will find an
investor to invest in my business. After that, I need to work on permission and license,
because in my country if we want to make a business especially in food we need to have the
“halal” certified, because most of Indonesian is muslim. I also should prepare and experiment
my own recipes when creating my food product, since it will require time to find the perfect
taste and compatibility with the insect that will interest people in buying my insect products.
I also need to prepare the farm workers. I don’t need too many workers, but what is
important is that I want them to be fully prepared with the knowledge of farming insects. I
want them to have good teamwork, and I want them to be able to farm the insects whole
heartedly, preparing the insects so they can be served as high quality food. I also want them
to contribute to the ideas and development of the farm, since they know exactly what is going
on in the field. I will prepare them with basic knowledge on these insect farming, and if
possible, I will hire the people that are actually insect biologists that has prior insect farming
knowledge.

At first, I think my farm does not need to be huge, about our edible insect classroom. I
think it is good enough. However, along with time I will make the farm bigger and bigger,
because in my opinion the demand will be more and more and I’m pretty sure about this idea
and it will become a huge and successful business.
In my farm, I will emphasize on the cleanliness of my farm. I will make sure that the
farmers are paid properly with high wages, and I will guarantee their housing and food, so
that they will put maximum effort into the farm. Then, I will also create an SOP that could
allow the farmers willingly to be disciplined to the rules, and I will make sure that
employment on becoming these insect farmers will be strict so they will not take the job for
granted. I will make sure that the farmers are on a roll on cleaning the farms twice a day
(once in the morning, once at night) to make sure that the farm is clean, since the purpose of
farming the insects is for human consumption. I will also make sure that the insect will have
clean food, because I want to get rid of the image that my insects consume dirty food (like
common cockroaches) and live in a dirty environment.
I think feeding my insect is no problem at all. I just need to give the grasshopper and
cricket a fresh clean grass and as for the cockroach I only need to provide them grains and
overripe fruits. Additionally for crickets, we can also feed some fruits and vegetables such as
apples, potatoes, and carrots. It is also important to keep my insects hydrated, so I will
provide them water in a very small water bowl/bottle cap. Later on, I will make some
experiment to lower my cost to feed the insect, so maybe if I can give cheaper ingredients to
them but it will not impact anyone I will definitely do that.
To provide housing for my insects, I will place them in spacious glass containers per
species, and I will also put several insects per glass container, to allow them to breed when it
is time. I also want them to live in a spacious container so that they will grow well in a good
size and live in a happy condition to ‘humanize’ the insects and also for my business
purposes. I will adjust the required temperature too per insect. Locusts need warmer
temperatures, so I will prepare them with warm mat in their containers. I will place them in a
place where they get enough sunlight, not too hot or not too cold. I will also put them in the
container where it has enough holes for the oxygen to get in, but I will make sure that the
hole is not too big so that they will escape from the containers. Inside the containers I might
also put living plants, so they can eat them fresh from the growing plant
Some people may be scared to eat insects, that’s why I will make my insect chips in
shape similar to potato chips. I will also make an interesting advertisement, which makes
people think about insect change.
In conclusion, I will start my grasshopper, cricket, and cockroach farm in my
hometown in Bandung. I will make insect chips which everyone can enjoy and eat
everywhere and anytime.
