Poem Analysis

Which one of the poems put women in a disadvantage? Why?

- The 2nd poem put women in a disadvantage. It reveals the issue of gender stereotyping
and how abundant it is to the society. It indicates that women, despite their belief, do not
have control over themselves. It shows that there is a limit to every woman’s full
potential and how it became their weakness. That every woman doesn’t have all the
rights to show their own strength and unique selves and that there will always be
situations that they will not fit.
Which of the poems put men in a disadvantage? Why?
- The 1st poem put men in a disadvantage. Besides how women are at disadvantage as
what I answered from the previous question. On the other hand, this poem also
manifests how men can be considerate at different aspects of life. How can they be not
vocal and showy even though they are also affected by the issue of gender stereotyping.
That they also have struggles on proving themselves that not all men are the same. With
the world we are living in, majority of the humanity have this mindset wherein men
always see women as a sexual object and every woman get raped because of what they
wear and how they act. On the other hand, not all men aren’t this type of person, they
are trying hard to prove every woman that there are men who are considerate and
sensitive with this type of issues.
What does Bonino et al would like to emphasize on?
- That men mislead women into believing they are respected as equals. It disadvantages
women because they believe they are making progress toward gender equality while
men continue to be favored and privileged over them. This explain especially the 2nd
poem where in women are at disadvantage. That in this world we are living in, there are
limits to every individual’s potential whether you’re a man or a woman. It reveals how
these limits become their flaw, where in fact, it should be their strength.
Which of the poems is better at challenging gender roles?
- I would say that the 1st poem is better at challenging gender roles, as it reveals not only
the limits of women but also limits of men. It made me realize how challenging it is not
only for women to prove in this society how unique they are, but also for men to prove in
this society that they are better than what we think of them.
How can we make the poem of Nancy Smith better? Explain thoroughly your point or points.
- I think that her poem is better off with lines in the last part that tells how women and men
differ still have their strengths to show off, and make the readers imagine how the world
can be powered by individuals with limitless potentials.
