Notes: Kinetic and Total Mechanical Energy
Kinetic Energy
■ Kinetic Energy = (KE) energy of ____________________
■ There are many types of kinetic energy, but we are going to focus on only one type:
energy due to motion from one location to another.
■ Examples:
■ Roller coasters going downhill, Skateboarding up and down a half-pipe, _______
Video Clips on PE and KE
■ What does “energon” mean? __________________
■ _________________ and energy are both measured in Joules.
■ “kinema” is the Greek work for _____________________, which is where the name
kinetic energy originates.
Calculating KE
■ KE = ½ m v2
■ ½ = 0.5 or half (constant with no units)
■ m = mass of object (kg)
■ v2 = velocity2 or velocity x velocity (m/s)
■ KE units are Joules because we are measuring energy.
KE Practice Problem
Determine the kinetic energy of a 0.142kg baseball that is pitched with a speed of 40.234 m/s.
G U E S S

Determine the kinetic energy of a 625.25kg roller coaster car that is moving with a speed of 18.3 m/s.
G U E S S

If the roller coaster car in the above problem were moving with twice the speed, then what
would be its new kinetic energy?
G U E S S

Energy Transformations

Mechanical Energy
■ Mechanical energy is the energy which is possessed by an object due to its motion
__________ due to its position.
■ Mechanical energy can be either kinetic energy (energy of motion) or potential energy
(stored energy of position).
■ Objects have mechanical energy if they are in motion and/or if they are at some position
____________________ to a zero potential energy position (for example, something
sitting on the ground has zero potential energy).
■ Examples of ME
■ A moving car possesses mechanical energy due to its motion
(____________________ energy).
■ A moving baseball possesses mechanical energy due to both its high speed
(____________________ energy) and its vertical position above the ground
(gravitational ____________________ energy).
■ A drawn bow possesses mechanical energy due to its stretched position (elastic
potential energy).
Calculating Total Mechanical Energy
■ TME = PE + KE
■ Remember there are 2 types of PE, so the equation can also look like this:
■ TME = PEgrav + PEspring + KE
TME Example

■ The diagram shows the motion of Li Ping Phar (esteemed ski jumper) as she glides down
the hill and makes one of her record-setting jumps.
Name: ___________________________________
Date: _________________ Hour: ___________
■ The total mechanical energy of Li Ping Phar is the sum of the potential and kinetic
energies. The two forms of energy sum up to __________________ Joules.
■ Shade the Bar graph to match the energy information when Li Ping Phar is at 30m. Each
line is equal to 10,000J.
