I READ ABOUT SOME HOLIDAYS IN NICARAGUA AND DO THE ACTIVITIES BELOW.

(LEA SOBRE LOS DIAS FERIADOS EN NICARAGUA Y HAGA LAS ACTIVIDADES).

 I – May 1: Labor Day/May Day

 May 30: Mother’s Day. Normally no school.
 July 19: Revolution Day (or

Parade in Esteli

Liberation Day). Celebrates the arrival of Sandinista rebels in Managua after

overthrowing Nicaraguan dictator Somoza. It has become mostly a political
celebration for the FSLN (Sandinista political party). Fireworks, parades,
flag-raising ceremonies, and many other festivities across the country.

 August 1 & 10: Managuans celebrate Santo Domingo de Guzman (Patron

Saint). Carnivals and festivals with horse parades and celebrations both days
in Managua.
 September 14: Battle of San Jacinto. Celebrating the defeat of the American
political entrepreneur William Walker in 1856 that led to his ouster from
power. Parades and cultural exhibitions throughout Nicaragua.
 September 15: Independence Day. A national holiday to celebrate the day
in 1821 when Nicaragua and other Central American countries declared their
independence from Spain. Beginning September 1, a torch is passed through
Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica, culminating on Independence Day.
 October 12: Indigenous Resistance Day (formerly Columbus Day) highlights
the struggle of native people against European colonialism.
 November 2: All Souls’ Day or the Day of the Dead. Nicaraguans
commemorate their deceased relatives by placing flowers on their graves and
praying. Government holiday.
 December 8: Feast of the Immaculate Conception or “La Purisma”. The
Virgin Mary is the patron saint of Nicaragua and Christians celebrate her
immaculate conception nationally on December 8 and in Leon on December
7. Locals make altars to celebrate La Purisma, and on the 8th sing in the
streets as they visit the altars made by their friends and neighbors. Special
masses, family feasts, fireworks, and festivities.
 December 16: Anniversary of the founding of the city of Esteli. Horse parade
the third Sunday of December.
 December 25: Christmas. Although Christmas is officially celebrated
nationally on the 25th, Christmas celebrations begin as early as a week
before and continue through the end of the year. On Christmas Eve, many go
to mass at midnight, following that with a late-night family dinner and the
exchange of gifts. Christmas day is usually spent relaxing with the family.
 December 31: New Year’s Eve. In addition to the New Years Eve parties
popular across the world, many Nicaraguans have a family dinner at
midnight followed by firecrackers and fireworks, Some parties last all night.
Some make effigies of popular or unpopular figures and set them afire at
midnight. Nicaragua holidays.
