Biol 1030 Exercise physiology group worksheet; worth 3%; To be completed as a

group Out of 10 marks

Group members’ names (first and last names, please, so I can give everyone the
grade!): Jelena Kornicer

Hannah Adams
Lucas Burleigh
Marisa Koning
Devante Phillips

Characteristic investigated: (e.g., smoking status, biological sex)

The characteristic that was investigated was fitness level.

Question (what you want to know based on your chosen characteristic) (1

mark): What affects a person’s ability to respond to and recover from
physiological stress?

Hypothesis (a tentative answer to your question) (1 mark):

Fitness level influences the response and recovery from the stress caused by exercise.

Prediction (how you will determine whether your hypothesis is supported; should include ‘would’
or ‘should’) (1 mark):
Individuals with higher fitness levels will have a lower heart and breathing rate during the exercise as
well as an easier recovery from stress compared with individuals of an average fitness level.

Rationale (why you think your hypothesis will be supported; you should have a few sentences about what
you know about homeostasis, response to and recovery from exercise, and your characteristic that
indicate why you think your hypothesis will be supported. You do not need citations, but it needs to be
clear this was thought out) (2 marks):
Homeostasis is a response that occurs when an organism is put under extreme stress. Those who
exercise more frequently will have better recovery since their muscles have adapted to the stresses
experienced during exercise.

final presentation/manuscript). Don’t forget the caption! (5 marks; 3 for figure, 2 for caption)

Figure 1: An individual’s heartbeat per minute during exercise based on their fitness level. The heartbeats
were measured during rest, response, and recovery. The three fitness categories compared were: elite,
above average, and average.
