DAILY PLAN
Lesson Title: Name Monsters
Grade Level: 2nd

S & S Statements:
This lesson is inspired by Halloween coming up very soon. This lesson is building off some of the
concepts the students worked on earlier in the semester. This lesson will take those separate
concepts and use them in one lesson.

Concepts and Skills

The artist concepts learned in this lesson will be organic and geometric shapes, identifying symmetry
in artwork, and usefulness of contour lines.
Academic Language:
Symmetry, organic shape, contour line, geometric shape

Purpose of Lesson:
Students will identify symmetry in plane shapes and in artwork. Students will create their own artwork
using their name.

Learning Objectives:
Conceptual Objective:
Students will identify line symmetry in plane shapes and in artwork.

Technical Objective:
Following demonstration, students will create their own piece of artwork using symmetry.

Assessment Criteria:
Successful completion of contour line over name.
Successfully cutting the folded paper on the correct side.
Competition of overall monster.

Teaching Resources Needed to Support the Lesson:

Finished examples of project

Art Materials Necessary for the Lesson:

White paper, colored paper, pencils, scissors, markers, glue

Teacher Directed Activities Student Activities

(What you will do) (What the students will do)
Introduction: Start off discussion about Halloween Introduction: Students will engage in class
and ask them what kinds of scary things they see discussion by answering and asking
around this time. Review the concept of symmetry questions.
and introduce what a contour line is. Explain project
idea with the class.
Development: As a group, have the students fold Development: Students will follow along with
the piece of paper towards their bodies. Then have the demonstration to ensure they have a good
them write their names on their paper, using the start.
entire space. If students have a shorter name they
can add their initials to it. After, have the students Students will then be able to have individual
draw a contour line over their name. They will cut work time to complete their monster.
along the line they just made with scissors. The
students will open up their "name" and reveal the
organic shape that resembles a monster. I will then
have the students draw the details with a pencil
then outline with a dark marker. Afterwards, I will
have the students color the rest with markers.

Conclusion: Instruct students to glue their monsters Conclusion: Students will glue their monsters
down to the construction paper. They will clean up down to the construction paper. They will
and show fellow classmates their monsters. clean up and show fellow classmates their
monsters.

Critical Comments and Reflections:

Overall, I thought this lesson went well. The students enjoyed this lesson a lot. I wanted to do this
lesson to review some ideas that didn't get covered as much as other lessons. This week, I was
much better with my time management. I was able to teach the whole lesson and the students had
ample amount of time to work on it and clean up. The one struggle this week that I didn't have in
other weeks was students not listening to the directions. When the students were directed to write
their name on the correct side of the paper there was a good handful that didn't do it right. I thought
maybe I didn't explain it well, so I went over it again and even drew it on the board. Even after that
some of the students didn't get it. Mr. Male and I had to go through and check all the students to
make sure they did it right, even then there were two that didn't follow along. This became frustrating
for the students and us during the lesson. One student wanted to give up but I worked one on one
with him to get him where he needed to be because he was far behind. After getting him caught up,
he ended up making two name monsters and wanted to make more, but class was over
unfortunately. I think next time if I were to do this lesson I would have the students mark the bottom
of
the page where they are supposed to write their name to avoid the confusion.
