Criterion A – Inquiring and Analyzing:

Strand 1: The Problem:
Electronic waste (E-waste) is a commonly used term to refer to discarded electronic devices that
have been rendered obsolete, inoperable, or unwanted. These kinds of devices can range from
smartphones, to tablets, to even microwaves. This may not seem like a problem, and definitely
wouldn’t be one if we produced it in smaller amounts. But today’s world is very technology
oriented, with the sales of any and all electronic items increasing exponentially. Unfortunately,
that is not all that is increasing exponentially. The E-waste is as well.

Now, why would E-waste be a problem, you ask. What we see in the E-waste is the discarded
outer shells of the electronic products, but there is a lot more going on inside it. Inside any
electronic product lies, tons of heavy metals, semimetals and chemical compounds including, but
not limited to: lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium, copper, beryllium, barium, chromium, nickel,
zinc, silver, and gold.

When we dispose of our electronic items, there is a huge possibility that these elements and
compounds will leak into their immediate environment, consequently contaminating it. A
leakage of these can affect the health of the community where this happens, by escaping into the
atmosphere. It can also enter water supplies, contaminating the entirety of the water in it, causing
huge problems like the death of marine wildlife, the transmitting of health problems to humans
who consume the water, or eutrophication.

Moreover, the elements alone can also cause a great deal of harm: Arsenic can disrupt cell
communication, possibly contributing to cancer, diabetes or cardiovascular diseases. Cadmium
affects your body’s ability to metabolize calcium, thus resulting in bone pain. Chromium can
affect your skin by irritating it or causing rashes. Copper can irritate the throat and lungs and
affect the liver and kidneys. Lead poisoning can cause the impairment of cognitive and verbal
activity.

As can be seen, this problem is very serious, and pertains imminently to large communities or
societies. For that reason, living in a very large community of over 1000 residents myself, I
decided to target my community as the audience for the solution that I create, in the form of an
extremely informative video related to the risk and causes of E-waste.

Strand 3: Similar Products:

As a solution to the problem of E-waste, I chose to create a video and publish it on YouTube, to
have a wide range of people view it and allow it to have a larger effect. While I chose to create a
video, there are many different products which could tackle a similar or the same problem, but in
different ways. Following is an analysis of these products:

A website informing people about E-waste:

Criteria Analysis
Cost A website would have a great cost to make in the following ways:
Making a website means that you would have to buy a domain. The cost of
this could range from USD10 - USD15 per year.
To add on, to make a good quality website, you would also have to purchase
expensive softwares and programs such as Adobe Dreamweaver.
Aesthetics Despite the cost, websites hold a great deal of appeal, especially when
conveying information. This is because, everything can easily be found, in
concise and well organized pages and sections. Moreover emotional or
appealing images can be added to it. Although, background music cannot be
added here.
Function The function of this kind of website would be to convey different messages
about e-waste. Due to the diverse ways through which websites can be
created, this would definitely provide a great opportunity for the creator to
add as much information as he can, and easily organize into various pages.
Ergonomics A website would be extremely easy to use, with the condition that you have
access to Wi-Fi or any other sort of internet connection. A simple search on
the web, from anywhere in the world, can allow people to view this website.
Although, unlike videos or booklets, it can only be viewed through the
internet, and not using any other method.
Quality The quality of the website depends on the website making ability of the
creator. Websites are very complex to make, and thus, it is extremely
difficult for an inexperienced person to learn and create a website in a

4|Page

limited amount of time.

User The users of this website could be anyone who browses the internet. Doing
so, it is possible for a broad range of people, including but not limited to,
students researching for school projects (this happens to be the most frequent
researching spot for them), entrepreneurs looking to start up a business on e-
waste, people who want to help their community by stopping the production
of e-waste, or even just curious people.
Environment This product does not harm the environment in any way, due to the fact that
it is digitally produced, and digitally viewed. Thus it involves no sort of
paper usage or wastage whatsoever.

A booklet informing the community about the dangers of e-waste:

Criteria Analysis
Cost A booklet could be quite expensive, especially considering the following
factors:
- The cost it would take to buy a suitable software to create it, i.e.
Adobe InDesign (USD 20.99 per month).
- The printing cost (USD 3-10 per book, depending on size, color and
other factors.)
Aesthetics Booklets would be very aesthetically appealing to people. This is especially
due to the colors that can be found in them and the great addition of pictures.
Moreover booklets are typically considered to be informative, and so even
with these very colorful additions and a lot of visuals, this booklet would still
serve the purpose.
Function The function of this kind of a booklet would be to alert people on e-waste
and raise awareness about its dangers. Due to the fact that a booklet can be
made into any size, and the creator will have some freedom when selecting
the amount of pages that they would like to have, this product would be able
to do its function well.
Ergonomics A booklet would be quite easy to use, although it does provide some threats:

5|Page
Sample B

Firstly, the booklet could easily get lost and therefore the user would have to
take care of it.
Secondly, to get a hold of the booklet, you would have to know someone
who has it, as it would not be accessible to everyone.
Quality The quality of the booklet would depend on two factors:
 The designing ability of the creator.
 The type of printing done.
User The users of a booklet would be severely limited. This is because, the only
people who could possibly be able to access the booklet would be people
who it is distributed to. This means that the possible users would be: people
in the creator’s community, school students, or e-waste management
companies.
Environment A booklet would harm the environment, due to the fact that it is produced
through printing and through the use of papers.

A podcast spreading awareness about e-waste:

Criteria Analysis
Cost Producing a podcast would not be greatly expensive, as there are many
professional audio editing softwares that can be found online or to download
for free. Neither would uploading the podcast be expensive.
Aesthetics In terms of aesthetics, podcasts fall back, compared to other products. This is
because podcasts are just an audio, and include no images, or graphics, or
anything that would appeal to the eye. The only way that a creator of a
podcast would be able to add to the aesthetics, would be to add subtle
background music.
Function The function of this podcast would be to inform the general audience about
the dangers related to e-waste and raise awareness about it. As an audio, this
would be a pretty straightforward way to easily fulfill the function.
Ergonomics An audio would be quite easy to use especially due to the following factors:
 You can be doing anything and be listening to the podcast at the

6|Page
Sample B

same time.
 It is easy to access for almost anybody around the world.
Quality The quality of a podcast would be really good, with the only exception that
the recorder being used to record it was faulty or not up to par. Otherwise,
the quality of a podcast is almost always guaranteed to be good.
User The users of this podcast could be anyone. It is possible for a broad range of
people, including but not limited to, students researching for school projects
(this happens to be the most frequent researching spot for them),
entrepreneurs looking to start up a business on e-waste, people who want to
help their community by stopping the production of e-waste, or even just
curious people.
Environment This product does not harm the environment in any way, due to the fact that
it is digitally produced, and digitally viewed. Thus it involves no sort of
paper usage or wastage whatsoever.

Strand 4: Design Brief:

As a solution to the problem of e-waste, I decided to make a detailed video regarding the
following about e-waste:

 What it is.
 Why it is a problem.
 The dangers.
 How it can be prevented.

The answers that I found to the above questions were:

Electronic waste (E-waste) is a commonly used term to refer to discarded electronic devices that
have been rendered obsolete, inoperable, or unwanted. This is a huge problem because, the
leakage of the elements and chemicals found inside our electronic waste can cause a plethora of
environment and health problems, such as cancer or cardiovascular diseases. This can be
prevented using the following ways:

7|Page
Sample B

- Donate or sell working electronics.

- Recycle the e-waste via a retailer.
- Know about e-cycling centers near you.
- Organize your electronics.
- Know your country/state’s laws about battery disposal.
- Consume less in order to reduce your e-waste.
- Store your data online.
- Buy star-rated appliances.

With this information, the next pieces of information I needed were to know how much people
actually knew about e-waste and how imminent the problem was. I did a survey to understand
this and also searched up how important this problem is. The following were the results that I
found:

From the survey I found that: 70% of people replied that they had never heard of the term e-
waste before. 50% of people said that they know nothing about e-waste and 33% of people said
that they knew very little about e-waste. 83% of people said that they did not know about the
dangers related to e-waste. 100% of people said that they did not know how to manage their e-
waste. 100% of people also said that they would manage their e-waste of they knew about the
proper way to do it.

From the internet I found that e-waste is an extremely imminent problem, because with the
exponentially increasing amount of electronics in the world, the amount e-waste is also predicted
to rise exponentially. This rise can cause a huge amount of health problems around the world,
and needs to be tackled immediately.

Thus I will ensure, that my video conveys all of the information listed above, since as found in
the survey, the majority of people need to know about this, and if they did, they would
immediately join in to tackle e-waste together.

The next thing that I needed to know to make a top quality video was how to make the video
appealing, what software to use, and how to make the video good quality. After interviewing
people, and researching using a range of source, the following was what I found:

8|Page
Sample B

I should use either one of the following softwares to create the video: Adobe Spark, PremierPro,
or Wondershare Filmora. Considering cost factors, and my own practice, I decided to use
Wondershare Filmora. It is a free and extremely professional software, and I have used it before,
meaning I am more familiar with it than any of the other softwares. Not only this, but on
researching, I found that it was one of the softwares that could aid me in making a very good
quality video.

To make my video appealing, I found that I should add a lot of vibrant colors to the video, and
ensure that any sort of images or graphics that I add should be relevant to the particular
information being conveyed at that point. Moreover, I found that I should add relevant
background music, which sets the tone/mood of the video the way I want it to. Lastly, I should
not combine both animated and non-animated graphics/pictures in one video. Since it is an
informative video, I decided against making it animated.

I also researched on existing videos on e-waste and discovered the following:

I should primarily make sure that the script of the video includes very pressing lines. Lines that
show people just how dangerous this problem is, and will immediately persuade them to take
action against it. Secondly my video, despite being informative, should not be boring. A boring
video will not allow the audience to concentrate, and therefore will have no effect.

Strand 4: Requirements for the creation of the chosen solution:

Script:
Electronics. They’re a huge part of our daily lives. But do we ever realize what happens to them
after we discard them? They become e-waste. Now what is e-waste? E-waste is a commonly
used term to refer to discarded electronic devices that have been rendered obsolete, inoperable,
or unwanted. It is a huge problem in today’s generation, but do people realize that? To
understand this, we interviewed a few people from the common public, and the following were
the results:

Interview questions:

 Have you ever heard of the term e-waste before?

 Do you know what it is?
 Do you have any e-waste at home, at your workplace, or at school?
 Do you know about the adverse effects of e-waste on human health?
 If there were a way to convey to you, what e-waste is, its health effects, and the
precautions, would you follow through with it?

Statistics show that the majority of people in the world don’t even know what e-waste is, let
alone any adverse effects, or any actions that can be taken to prevent it. Without knowing what

22 | P a g e

the problem is, how can we possibly aim to solve it? This ignorance, may just cost us and our
future generations heavily.

We say that the baby boomers ignored global warming. Will the future generations be saying we
ignored e-waste?

This imminent problem needs to be solved immediately, or it will end up being a huge risk to all
of us. But of course, what are the health risks of e-waste? The major health risks that e-waste
causes are: Cancers, cardiovascular diseases, bone pain and fragile bones, skin irrigation, throat
and lung irritation, compromising of the livers and kidneys, impairment of cognitive and verbal
ability, paralysis, coma, and even death.

And how can it be prevented? Donate or sell working electronics, recycle the e-waste via a
retailer, know about e-cycling centers near you, organize your electronics, know your
country/state’s laws about battery disposal, consume less in order to reduce your e-waste, store
your data online, and buy star-rated appliances.

So now that you know this, please ensure that you no longer endanger your life, or the lives of
anyone around you. Reduce your e-waste production, and stay safe!

Strand 4: Full justify any changes made to the chosen design and the plan:
I have made a few changes to my plan, and significant changes to my chosen design. Beginning
with the plan, the changes I made were:

Instead of making my video using this process: I would take each clip or picture separately, edit
it, then combine them to make the video, and re-edit them so that they fit in with each other and
the narration in the background.

The process I used instead was: I found and added all of the pictures and clips that I needed, and
then edited them based on the narration already in the background, and cut them accordingly.
This method was used instead because it seemed a lot more of a logical process, and primarily
editing the videos against each other would make the video flow a lot smoother, without the need
for transitions.

Because of the fact that the order I which I was doing all of the above had changed, another
change was that I ended up doing all three of these steps on the same days, rather than different
days.

Moving onto the design plan, the plan that I had made in criterion B was mostly followed
through. The only changes I made were:

 I changed the first slide from a clip of an I-pad to a clip of a computer.

 I changed some of the font sizes of the text.
 I changed some frames.
 I added a few extra frames to make the video better.
 I interviewed only 3 people and not four.
 The background of the interviews was changed.

Firstly, as for the change in the first slide, I did this change because according to statistics,
people, especially teenagers (the major group that uses technology), use desktops, computers,
and laptops, more than they do I-pads. Because of this, I thought the video would be more
persuasive and effective if I used a computer instead of an iPad.

Secondly, as for the font sizes of the text, I ended up changing some of them. This is because,
when I was designing, I hadn’t anticipated how big or small some of the font sizes might be, and
so I had to change some of them, to make them a more appropriate size for the frame.

Thirdly, I changed some of the frames in the video. An example is the fifteenth frame in the
design, where I was supposed to add a clip of an e-waste center. Instead I added a clip of a phone
being scrolled through. This was because when actually creating the video, this clip fit in a lot
better, than the original one decided.

Another change was that I added a few extra frames in between the pre-decided ones. I made this
change because it helped the video flow smoother, and without them, the narration in some parts
would have lasted for too long on only one frame, and made the video boring.

The next change I made was that I interviewed only three people instead of four. This was to
ensure that the video doesn’t become too long. Moreover, watching four different interviews
would bore the audience.

I also changed where the interviews will take place. Instead of outside, near a tree, I made the
interviews take place inside a building, at a table and a desk. This is because the sunlight outside
was spoiling the visibility of the interviewees, and all the other elements outside weren’t
allowing the focus to be on the interviewee.

Criterion D: Evaluating
Strand i: Data collection to test the success of the solution:
To be able to understand how good my product was, I had to take surveys and generate data
whereby I was told about its success and how good it was. The following are the results:

long.

Strand iii: Improvements to the solution:

There are several ways through which my product could be improved, as I have found out by
personally analyzing it, and through the numerous interviews that I have done. These
improvements are:

 Making sure that the audio in the interviews isn’t overpowered by the background music.
 Making sure that the volume of the audio is the same throughout the video, and doesn’t
differ.

39 | P a g e
Sample B

Firstly, one of the interviewees stated that at some point in the video, specifically when the
interviews of the general public commence, the background music starts overpowering their
voices, not entirely, but enough to make a detail oriented viewer’s attention shift. There are also
two ways in which I can improve this: Firstly, I could cut that part of the audio, from the rest, to
be able to adjust its volume and make it lower. Secondly, I could also remove the background
music from that part entirely, to ensure that there is full focus on what the interviewee is saying.

Secondly, People also said that the volume of the audio that I had narrated, and the volume of the
interviewees speaking, was different. This made the volume of the audio of the video differ as
the video progressed. To improve this, I would have to cut the audio into parts based on how the
volume in each differs. Afterward, I would have to adjust the volume of each part to ensure that
the volume of the overall audio is the same throughout.

These tiny improvements could make my video a whole lot better, and of an amazing quality.
Due to this, I will ensure that I make these improvements within due time.

Strand iv: Impact of solution on client/audience:

Based on all of the interviews that I have taken, this product has had a huge impact on the
audience. This can be seen easily through the surveys that I have done, and one of the surveys is
also shown in criterion D, strand i. They have had an impact in the following way:

 The product has taught people about the potential problems of e-waste.
 The product has conveyed to people the negative health effect of e-waste.
 The product has told people how to prevent e-waste.
 The product has educated people on what e-waste is.
 The product has conveyed to the target age group that them ignoring e-waste today, can
cause a huge problem for the future generations.

Firstly, the product had a huge impact on people from teaching them about e-waste. This ensures
that the general population, which doesn’t even know about e-waste, can know understand what
it is, and possibly take action against it. Moreover, this made people realize that there is an
imminent problem that they were most likely unaware of until now.

40 | P a g e
Sample B

Secondly, the product has conveyed the potential problems of e-waste, as well as the negative
health effects that it has on humans. This has a huge impact on people as it makes them
immediately realize how huge of a problem e-waste is. Since the product shows how the people
will personally be affected, the people would immediately want to take action against it, in order
to save themselves and ensure the protection of their loved ones.

Thirdly, the product lets people know how to prevent e-waste. This enhances the impact that
knowing about the health problems has on people. This is because, just knowing the problems
and wanting to take action against them wouldn’t mean that the people would know how to
properly do it. My product ensures that as soon as they learn about the problems, they are
immediately taught how to prevent it as well. This has a huge impact on the audience as it further
motivates them to solve this problem.

Lastly, the product has conveyed to the target age group that them ignoring e-waste today, can
cause a huge problem for the future generations. With this age group actively pointing fingers at
the baby boomers for ignoring global warming, when made to realize, through my product, that
them may be doing the same thing with e-waste, there is a huge impact on them. So concerned
about causing a huge problem in the future themselves, they would immediately want to take
action to prevent that from happening.
