PETE 662 Homework #2: Horizontal Well Performance

Spring 2019 Date Assigned: 1/29/2010

1. A 5000 foot long horizontal lateral is producing from a 50-foot thick reservoir having
a horizontal permeability of 2 md and a vertical permeability of 0 .5 md. The lateral is 6
inches in diameter and is draining a region that is 5000 feet long in the direction of the
well and 3000 feet long in the direction perpendicular to the well (i. e., the width of
reservoir). The lateral is centered in the reservoir. The pressure at the drainage boundary
is 3000 psia (you can use the same pressure for average reservoir pressure if needed), the
oil has a viscosity of 8 cp, and the formation volume factor is 1.1. Construct an inflow
performance plot (IPR) for this lateral and calculate the production rate for a bottomhole
flowing pressure in the lateral of 1500 psia using:
a) Joshi/Economides Model
b) Furui et al. Model
c) Babu and Odeh Model
Compare the results among the different models and state your conclusions.

Note: For Problems 1 & 2, please state any assumptions that you made in your
calculations. If any of these models cannot be used to solve the problem, please state the
reasoning.
