Brief description and ● This lesson introduces students to the farmer’s market. Through a read aloud, they will
rationale for the lesson discover and learn what they can find at a farmer’s market. This is crucial for those that
have never been to a farmer’s market before. According to Farmers Markets: Teaching Kids
Where Food Comes From, the farmer’s market gives students a chance to “get to know”
fresh produce through the identification of vegetables. Not only does this lesson
introduce students to the farmer’s market but also deepens their understanding of
different produce.

Anticipatory Set (Connection/Motivation):
1. Say: “Hello friends! I went grocery shopping yesterday. I want to share some of the food I
have purchased with you. In this basket, I have so many colorful fruits and vegetables.”
2. Ask: “Can you help me name these fruits and vegetables? Where can you buy fruits and
vegetables from?” Ask students to share their ideas and record their responses on the
whiteboard.
3. Say: “Today, we will focus on one of these places, the farmer’s market! Give me a thumbs
up if you have been to the farmer’s market before.”

Instruction/Mini Lesson:
1. Say: “Today, I want to share a book with you. This book is called Max Goes to the Farmers’
Market. In this book, Max and his mother went to the farmer’s market to shop for fresh
produce the local farmers brought to sell.”
2. Introduce the vocabulary, farmer’s market. Show students a few pictures of the farmer’s
market. Ask them to share what they see in the pictures. Ask them to define what they
think a farmer’s market is.
3. Introduce other relevant vocabularies and provide visual aids to support the students.
○ Eggs
○ Fruits (e.g., apples, peaches)
○ Vegetables (e.g., lettuce, carrots)
○ Flowers
○ Farmers
4. Read Max Goes to the Farmers’ Market and ask students the following questions:
○ Page 8: What are these? What kind of vegetables do Max see at the farmer market?
○ Page 12: What is this? Explain to them that the farmer’s market also has dairy
products (e.g., eggs).
○ Page 14: What are these? What kind of fruits do Max see at the farmer’s market?
○ Page 18: Wow, these are so colorful! What are these? Explain to them that the
farmer’s market also has flowers.
5. Turn and Talk: What did Max see and find at the farmer’s market? Ask students to share
their ideas and record their responses on the whiteboard.
Independent Practice:
1. Introduce and go over the directions for the small group activity. Each group will receive
an assortment of farmer’s market cards. On each card, there will be a picture of an object.
○ First, students will identify the object.
○ Next, they will decide if this object belongs at the farmer’s market and their
reasoning.

○ Last, they will sort, categorize, and glue these cards into two groups: objects that
belong at the farmer’s market and objects that do not belong at the farmer’s
