THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter presents the background, theoretical framework, conceptual

framework, objectives of the study, scope and limitations of the study and

definition of terms.

Introduction

The University of Rizal System Cainta serves many students from all

places in the province of Rizal and offers higher education. It means there are

many students who want to have their freedom, to voice out their opinion, share

their reactions, and ask questions regarding the school.

In this study the researchers found out some students are having a

problem with regards to their subjects that needs an urgent solution. One of

these problems, includes the school does not have an official blog site, and the

school only has a Facebook account and it is not updated regularly since only

one person is assigned as an administration. The Facebook group is limited only

to those members of the group, that’s why not all the students are updated

regarding the announcements and events in school.

Through this gathered information, the researchers decided to create Blog to

provide information regarding the school announcements, events, and activities

2

in University of Rizal System Cainta. Using the proposed Blog of the school will

lessen the workloads of the teachers and also the students. This study will be

conduct at the University of Rizal System Cainta Campus by the year 2015-2016.

As Information Technology students, the researchers are given an

opportunity to conduct this study. This opportunity will give the researchers

chance to help the school, faculty and students.

Background of the Study

The researchers created the Blog to provide a forum and display activities

and events of the school. The researchers view the existence of the school blog

as a tool to help the teachers and students to communicate with each other and

getting information of what is happening inside and outside of the campus.

Creating a blog can be a bridge for students between the familiar digital

world and what is being asked of them in academic essays, projects and other

university-based assignments. Blogging can be seen as a gateway experience

for students who will likely be using digital technologies and media in their future

endeavors regardless of their discipline.1

Blogs are set-up like conventional Web sites, with navigation links, and

other standard Web site features. Blogs have one standard characteristic, which

is: the posting. Blog postings are text entries, similar to a diary or journal, which

include a posting date and may include comments by people other than the

author, photos, links, or another digital media. Postings are often short and
3

frequently updated. They appear in reverse chronological order and can include

archived entries.2

A blog is a publication mechanism, like a journal or bulletin. Blogs can

promote open dialogue and encourage community building in which both the

bloggers and commenters exchange opinions, ideas, and attitudes. Teachers

can use a blog to publish instructional materials that the students can access to

and where the students can make comments. Teachers can also let students set

up their own blogs for a particular subject or for several subjects and then assign

tasks to students.3

‘A blog is basically a journal that is available on the web. The activity of

updating a blog is “blogging” and someone who keeps a blog is a “blogger.”

Blogs are typically updated daily using software that allows people with little or no

technical background to update and maintain the blog. Postings on a blog are

almost always arranged in chronological order with the most recent additions

featured most prominently.4

The researchers believed that the creator of school blog can help the

teachers and students to exchange ideas and can communicate with each other

in terms of subject matters.

According to David Warlick, “A blog (a shortening of web LOG) has

become a journalistic tool, a way to publish news, ideas, rants, announcements,

and ponderings very quickly, and without technical, editorial, and time
4

constraints. It essentially makes anyone a columnist. In fact, many established

columnists now publish their own blogs.”5

Set writing which the student’s access online can follow their activities,

and monitor the programs.

Computer do have the internet which helps researchers in their study. The

University teachers authorized to operate and implement pertinent programs,

activities in school nationwide. It provides information that they can share their

achievements and it also can help to recommend good things in their school.

As an E-commerce law defines,

“Computers” refers to any device or apparatus which, by electronic, electro-
mechanical, or magnetic impulse, or by other means, is capable of receiving, recording,
transmitting, storing, processing, retrieving, or producing information, data, figures,
symbols or other modes of written expression according to mathematical and logical
rules or of performing any one or more of these functions”.6

The study says that this is a great help in making a blog for the school,

since this blog makes an easy way to find the information you need to know. The

students can be updated every day.

In this study the researchers see that blogs are big help to the students

and teachers.

Downes (2004) concludes how blogs are used in education in detail,

including replacing the standard class Web page, linking to Internet items relating

to courses, organizing class seminars and to provide summaries of readings. 7

According to educational specialists Drs. Fernette and Brock Eide, the use

of blogs in an educational setting produces several benefits. These benefits

5

include the promotion of critical and analytical thinking, increased access and

exposure to quality content and a combination of solitary and social interactions

with peers. The educational benefits of blogging can also extend to the

administrative and teaching aspects of how a class operates. 8

In this study the researchers, find out the relationship between the blog

and the people who serves as contributors.

Peter Merholz (2002) coined the term "blog" in early 1999. He announced

that on a sidebar to his home page "I've decided to pronounce the word "weblog"

as wee'- blog. Or "blog" for short." The term caught on, but Merholz comments

that it would likely have died if not for the release of Pyra Lab's Blogger in

summer 1999.9

Now a days, people live in a modern technology. A lot of students use the

net/internet connection to browse or to access the World Wide Web because of

their homework, projects, and researches. Furthermore, this is the reason why all

the students are in front of the computer or smart phones. Blog help the students

and teachers to get information in a matter of second. A student can informed at

home or at school on what is happening or the announcement in the University.

The teachers can gather information from the student for their sharing of

thoughts.

Peter Duffy, Educational Development Officer at The Hong Kong

Polytechnic University, and Dr. Axel Bruns, Media and Communication, Creative

Industries faculty member at Queensland University of Technology; suggest that

6

students can benefit from the structure of a blog in several ways. A blog provides

students with an opportunity to demonstrate critical thinking skills and to employ

language and writing principles that demonstrate analytical thought and

comprehension. 10

To conduct their study, the researchers used computers and internet for

the main source of their research because it has an access to connect with one

another.

Theoretical Framework

The field of information systems is premised on the centrality of

information technology in everyday socioeconomic life. Yet, drawing on a review

of the full set of articles published in Information Systems Research (ISR) over

the past ten years, we argue that the field has not deeply engaged its core

subject matter—the information technology (IT) artifact. Instead, we find that IS

researchers tend to give central theoretical significance to the context (within

which some usually unspecified technology is seen to operate), the discrete

processing capabilities of the artifact (as separable from its context or use), or

the dependent variable (that which is posited to be affected or changed as

technology is developed, implemented, and used). The IT artifact itself tends to

disappear from view, be taken for granted, or is presumed to be unproblematic

once it is built and installed. 11

7

This study is anchored on the Theories of (Information) Technology in

Organizations by SundeepSahay. The researchers choose this theory to identify

and discuss the theories of Information Technology in Organization. The purpose

of this theory is to study acceptance and use of technology in a consumer

context.

Conceptual Framework

The researchers used the waterfall model as their conceptual framework.

The Waterfall model is a sequential design process, used is software

development processes in which progress is seen as flowing steadily downwards

(like a waterfall) through the phase of conception, initiation, analysis, design,

construction, testing, production/implementation and maintenance. 12

In requirements analysis and software definition phase, this is the first

phase involves understanding what you need to design and what is its function,

purpose etc. It also gathered data will be sorted and encoded in the computer.

System design the algorithm or flowchart of the program or the software

code to be written in this stage. It is very important stage, which relies on the

previous two stages for its proper implementation. Hardware and software

requirements for every module are identified and designed accordingly. Also the

inter relation between the various logical modules are established at this stage.

Algorithms and diagrams defining the scope and objective of each logical model
8

are developed in short, this phase lays a fundamental for actual programming

and implementation.

System Implementation, this is the software process in which codes takes place.

A software program is written based upon the algorithm designed in the system

design phase. The system will be used by the authorized personal in book and

internet for testing.

System verification, the program implemented software module is tested

for correct output, errors are removed at this stage. In the process of testing the

program, a series of tests and test cases performed to check the module for

faults and the other errors. Errors codes are rewritten and tested again until

desired output is achieved.

System maintenance, this is the final phase of waterfall model, in which

complete program product is handed over to the client after testing. After the

program has been deployed on the client site, it is the duty of the program

development team to undertake routine maintenance activities by visiting the site.

The researchers chose waterfall model because this model is the easiest

to implement in the eyes of the most of the managers, due to its linear model.

Since the process of this model is carried out the linear manager, the cost of

resources is reduced to a large extent, which in turn helps in reducing the cost of

the project considerably. Lastly, the documentation and testing happens at the

end of each phase, helps in maintaining the quality of our project.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Method

The researchers used the descriptive developmental type of research.

This method is disciplined injury conducted in the content of program for the

purpose of improving the study being developed.

Descriptive method is a type of research that mainly concerned with

describing the nature or condition and the degree in the detail of the present

situation. This method is used to describe the nature of a situation, as it existed

at the time of the study and to explore the cause of particular phenomenon. The

aim of descriptive research is to obtain an accurate population of the people,

events, or situations.

Development research is the systematic study of designing, developing

and evaluating instructional programs, processes, the must meet criteria of

internal effectiveness and consistency. This developmental research is

particularly important in the field of instructional technology.

This method used by the researchers for designing and for the

development of the Blog and also to make the Blog more informative and more

useful for the students and teachers.
