REACTION PAPER

(Maria Ressa, Journalist and CEO of Rappler - BBC HARDtalk)

Watching Maria Ressa’s interview, it’s funny how people get angry at Maria Ressa. The
treatment of journalists and activists in the Philippines is completely absurd. According to what I
understand, Maria Ressa was imprisoned for doing what any other journalist would do: speaking
out against an issue. In my opinion, the president's attempt to suppress journalists for performing
their jobs is far from democratic. As a journalist, you must help educate people about what is
going on in our nation. But when you are a journalist you have to back up your report, you
should have evidence in any necessary facts. Maria Ressa is battling for the truth. And she lives
in a world where facts are contested; when the world's greatest news distributor prioritizes the
transmission of falsehoods, laced with fury and hatred, and distributes it quicker and wider than
facts, journalism becomes activism. And that is the transition she has gone through in Rappler,
which she is attempting to figure out while standing on sand.
