Final Project Report – Third Term

Written report

1. Diabetes is a disease that affects the way the body uses glucose, the main type of sugar in
the blood. Glucose, from food, is the main source of energy to supply the body's functions. To use
glucose, the body needs the hormone insulin, produced in the pancreas. In diabetes, the body
does not make enough or not at all of insulin, or it does not work properly. This causes a high level
of glucose in the blood or hyperglycemia, which is the main characteristic of diabetes. The brain
uses 25% of the body's total glucose, yet it stores very little. Always has glucose must be available
to keep the brain working properly. It is vitally important that the blood glucose level is kept in a
range of 60 to 120 mg / dl, to prevent a lack of supply to the nervous system. If there is no insulin
or the receptors of the cells in the muscle and fat cells do not work, the glucose cannot penetrate
the cells, and the affected person will lack nutrients.
