Introduction

We recite surat al-Fatihah at least seventeen times a day in

our obligatory prayers. It is pillar of our salah, without its
recitation in each rakat the prayer is not valid. It’s imperative
that each Muslim know the meaning in depth of this great
surah. With it we complete salah which is the first action we
will be judged, on the day of judgement. If our salah is good
all other actions will be good. Our afterlife is dependent on
our Salah if we correct salah, all of our other affairs will also
be corrected. Knowing the meaning and benefit of al-Fatihah
will enable us to improve our concentration and draw us
closer to our Creator. Surah al-Fatihah is a conversation with
Allah. As we will discover in this booklet.
References are provided within the text.

And this [Qur'an] is a Book We have

it and fear Allah that you may receive
mercy. Surah Al-An’amm 6:155

Challenge: Write the meaning!

We recite Surah al-Fatihah in every prayer in every rakah. We’ve
memorized it. We repeat it often but do we really know it’s meaning? Do
we understand the value of this surah? Are we taking full advantage of its
blessings?

Take the Challenge! Beside each verse write the meaning?

Salah Is Good! All is Good!

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, sallallaahu

'alayhi wa sallam, said, “The first action for which a servant
of Allah will be held accountable on the Day of Resurrection
will be his prayers. If they are in order, he will have
prospered and succeeded. If they are lacking, he will have
failed and lost. If there is something defective in his
obligatory prayers, then the Almighty Lord will say: See if
My servant has any voluntary prayers that can complete
what is insufficient in his obligatory prayers. The rest of his
deeds will be judged the same way.”

Lesson 2

Names! Names! And More Names!

Surah Al-Fatihah has more than 25 names because it has so

many blessings, benefits and uses. Including: Ummul
Kitab/Quran, Sab’ul Mathani, As-Salah, Al-Hamd, Shifaa and
Ar-Ruqya. Each name refers to a different attribute. In this
book we have selected the most famous names.

In one statement Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu

'alayhi wa sallam mentioned four names. Abu
Hurayrah (R.A) said that the Messenger of Allah
sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam said: “Al-
Hamdulillah is Umm Al-Quran and Umm Al-Kitab
(the Mother of the Book) and Sab’ul Mathani (the
seven oft-repeated).” (Tirmidhi: 3124)

It is the first Surah of Quran and lays the foundation to the

entire Quran. Therefore, it is referred to as
Ummul Kitab/Quran
Mother of The Book or Mother of Quran

Sab’ul Mathani (the seven oft-

repeated)
This surah recited in every rakah in every
prayer.
Allah says, "We have sent to you the Seven
Oft Repeated Verses.“ Al-Qur'an 15:87
Al Fatihah is referred to as-Salah because prayer is not
complete without it. The prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa
sallam said, “There is no prayer without the Fatihah of the
book.”
Al-Bukhari and Muslim

Al-Hamd (The Praise) because the Prophet sallallaahu

'alayhi wa sallam said “that Allah said, ‘The prayer (Al-
Fatihah) is divided into two halves between Me and My
servants.’ When the servant says, ‘All praise is due to Allah,
the Lord of existence.’ Allah says, ‘My servant has praised
Me.’”
As-Sindi, 'Sharh as-Sindi 'ala Ibn Majah'
Ar-Ruqya: reciting Quran for healing and protection against evil
Abu Saeed al-Khudri narrates:
“While on a journey we halted at a place. A girl came to us
and said: “The chief of this tribe has been stung by a
scorpion and our men are not present, is there anybody
amongst you who can recite something upon him to treat
him?” Then, one of our men went along with her although
we did not think that he knew any such treatment.
However, our friend went to the chief and recited
something upon him and the chief was cured. Thereupon,
the chief gave him thirty sheep and gave us all milk to drink.
When he returned, we asked our friend: “Did you know
anything to recite upon him to cure him?” He said: “No, I
only recited Umm al-Kitab (i.e. Surah al-Fatihah) upon
him.” We said that do not do anything until we reach
Madinah and ask the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam
regarding this (practice and reward-whether the sheep
were lawful or not for us). Upon reaching Madinah, we
narrated this to the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam,
whereupon he remarked: “How did he come to know that
Al-Fatihah can be used as a cure (Ar-Ruqya)? Distribute
your reward amongst yourselves and a lot a share for me as
well”.” (Sahih Bukhari)

Why is it called Al-Shifaa?

The prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam ihah said, “The opening of the
book is a cure to every poison” (Tabrani)
The Opening

Fatihah is the opening for happiness and success in our life. We

begin by praising Allah recognizing His Mercy to all Creation.
Especially specific Mercy to the Muslims whom He guided to Islam.
We also recognize the Day of Judgment and our final destination is
completely dependent on Allah accepting our deeds.

It is means of success from every struggle. Any difficulty can be

eased by reciting Al-Fatihah. In these seven verses we establish our
dependency on the Most Merciful, the All-Powerful Allah. All
success depends on Him. We confirm our worship to Him Alone. We
understand that help comes only from Allah although there are
worldly means which we must utilize.
Finally, we ask Allah for guidance to His path not any other path
which He does not accept.
It is only through His path we can have triumph in this life and the
Hereafter.
This is not to say that our life will be without trial. We willed be tried
but only through deepening our relationship with Allah can we pass
these tests. As-Salah connects us with Allah throughout our lives.
Every rakah in every prayer we are speaking directly to Allah!

Lesson 3
What You Get

Reward for Reciting Al-Fatihah

Count the letters and multiply by ten to find the minmum
reward for reciting Al-Fatihah once.

Take the number and multiply by 17 for the five daily

prayers.

Multiply that number to find the reward for one week.

Abdullah ibn Mas’ud reported: The Messenger of

Allah, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam , said, “Whoever
recites a letter from the Book of Allah, he will
receive one good deed as ten good deeds like it.
I do not say that Alif Lam Mim is one letter, but
rather Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter, and Mim is a
letter.”

Speaking With Allah

Abu Huraira reported: The Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa

sallam , said, “Allah Almighty said: I have divided prayer
between myself and my servant into two halves, and my
servant shall have what he has asked for.
When the servant says ‘All Praise is due to Allah the Lord of
the worlds,’
Allah says: My servant has praised me.
When the servant says ‘The Gracious, the Merciful,’
Allah says: My servant has exalted me.
When the servant says ‘The Master of the Day of Judgment,’
Allah says: My servant has glorified me and my servant has
submitted to me.
When he says ‘You alone we worship, You alone we ask for
help,’
Allah says: This is between me and my servant, and my
servant will have what he has asked for.
When he says ‘guide us to the straight path, the path of those
whom you have favored, not those who went astray,’
Allah says: This is for my servant, and my servant will have
what he has asked for.”

Reflection Prompt:

Say it aloud or write it down!

Write: What do you think and feel about conversing with Allah
directly?
Lesson 4 Allah responds:

When we say (what means) You

Alone(Allaah) we worship, and You Alone
we ask for help .
Allah Responds (what means) “This is between me
and my servant, and my servant will have what
he has asked for.”

These are very powerful words by which we can achieve

success in this world and the Hereafter. We need to
understand their full implication.

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [rahimahullaah]) said: This ayah

necessitates having knowledge of the path leading to
servitude to Allah, which is nothing else other than
worshipping Allah alone through the deeds He loves and
is pleasing to Him, and seeking His help to worship Him
[alone]. (Al-Fawaa-id: page: 41)

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim (rahimahullaah) said: I used to

hear Shaikhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullaah)
often saying: You alone we worship repels Riyaa
(showing off) and And you alone we ask for help
repels pride. Badaa-I At-Tafseer Al-Jaami Limaa Fassarahu
You alone we worship is based on four
foundations:
Fulfilling what is beloved and pleasing to Allah and His
Messenger sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam
1. through speech of the tongue,
2. belief in the heart,
3. deeds of the heart and
4.actions of the limbs.

Therefore, you alone we worship is compliance with the

rulings (attached) to these four foundations and consenting
to them.

On the other hand, And you alone we ask for help is to seek
Allah’s Aid and Assistance in these affairs and asking to be
blessed with the ability to act upon them.
Badaa-I At-Tafseer Al-Jaami Limaa Fassarahu

Allah responds to Duaa:
“This is for my servant, and my servant will have
what he has asked for.”
When we say; ‘guide us to the straight path, the path of those whom
you have favored, not those who went astray,’

Can we always depend on Allah to guide us?

What if we do not receive what we want?

Abu Hurayrah narrated,

“The Messenger of Allah
Allah says: “And when My sallallaahu 'alayhi wa
servants ask you, [O sallam said: “A person’s
Muhammad sallallaahu 'alayhi duaa will continue to be
wa sallam ], concerning Me - answered so long as he
indeed I am near. I respond to does not pray for
the invocation of the something sinful or for the
supplicant when he calls upon breaking of family ties.”
Me.” (Holy Qur’an 2:186) (Muslim)

It was narrated from Abu Sa’eed that the Prophet sallallaahu

'alayhi wa sallam said, “There is no Muslim who does not offer
any duaa in which there is no sin or severing of family ties, but
Allah will give him one of three things in return: either He will
answer his duaa sooner, or He will store it up for him in the
Hereafter, or He will divert an equivalent evil away from him
because of it.” The Prophet’s companions said, “We will say a
lot of duaa’.” He said, “Allah is more generous.” (Ahmad)

Be aware, that perhaps through your supplications to Allah, He

is saving you from something evil, or Allah stores something
better for you in the Hereafter.
Reflection Prompt:
Say it out loud or write it down!

Is making dua’ effective ? Provide detailed explanation.

Lesson 5 A Surah Of Greatness

These two names of Allah are repeated twice each in Surah Al-
Fatihah; in the first verse and than again in the third. Repetition
indicates emphasis.
Ibn Uthaymeen explains:
Ar-Rahman' - He is attributed with vast mercy, because this
word-form in the Arabic language signifies vastness and
fullness.

'Ar-Raheem' – a noun that signifies the action.

When combined, 'Ar-Rahman' and 'Ar-Raheem' mean that
Allah’s mercy is vast and reaches the creation.

This is what some scholars alluded to by saying:

'Ar-Rahman' is a universal mercy [to all the creation] and
'Ar-Raheem' is a specific mercy for the believers.

Allah’s Rahman Allah’s Raheem

The Greatest Surah

“Ahmad records on the authority of Abu

Sa’ad ibn Al-Mu’alla who said (in part of the
hadith) that the Prophet (sallallahu ‘alayhi
wa sallam) said,
“I will teach a Surah which is the greatest
Surah in the Quran before you leave the
Masjid.’ Then he took hold of my hand and
when he intended to leave [the Masjid], I
asked him, “Did you not say that you would
teach me a Surah which is the greatest
Surah in the Qur’an?” He replied, ‘Yes. It is
[the Surah commencing with], “All praise
and thanks are due to Allah.” It is the
Seven Oft-Repeated verses and the Great
Qur’an that has been given to me.’
Part of the Two Lights

[the sound of] a gate that has been opened in heaven
today and has never been previously opened.” Then an
Angel descended through it and came to the Prophet
(sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) and said, ‘Rejoice in the
good news of two lights that have been given to you
