Formative Assessment:

A formative assessment can be used before a lesson to learn what students know and/or what
they want to know. An assessment can also be used during a lesson to check for
understanding. Lastly, using a formative assessment at the end of a lesson is important
because you are able to note what students are understanding and what is challenging for
them.

One “old school” strategy that is used is an exit ticket. This is by far my favorite because you
can get students to work on it themselves individually. This helps to understand if students are
understanding a concept or they have to do the work themselves to try a bit more to understand.
This is vital especially if you create questions they must answer before they leave. This
assignment can be graded such as for participation points or simply on the answers or it can be
not graded and helps to better understand where students are.

One digital tool that can be used is a quizlet. This digital tool is a form of note cards. This one is
great for terms such as vocabulary or matching such as one word like a name of a character
and a description of characters. It helps to get practice in for students. I also like that it has a
feature for matching and it will time you. This would be great for students to also start a friendly
competition and watch who can complete the matching faster. In addition, there is a feature to
write the answer to the note card or even test yourself. These are all great features that can be
used in the beginning of a book read. Themes would be listed. As the book goes on, note cards
with themes and how they are displayed in the play can be included to check if students are
doing the reading or if they are engaging in it. Below is an example of it.
