More pressure, unbalanced
more wear!
Unless a mechanical seal is hydraulically
balanced, the full force of the hydraulic
pressure present in the process will act
on the sealing surface. This is in addi-
tion to the necessary spring force,
which is already designed into the
seal. Therefore, an unbalanced seal will
always have additional unneces-
sary load on the seal faces.

This additional face load increases

friction, which results in heat and
increased wear thus shortening the
service life of the seal.

Pressure balancing balanced

minimizes your
operating costs!
It has been a known fact in the market
for years that the life expectancy of
unbalanced mechanical seals is shorter
than those versions that have hydraulic
pressure balancing.

A number of industries, such as refin-

eries, have specified years ago in API

Mechanical seals are still being specified, manufactured and installed according to To reach an optimal service life, only balanced seals should be used, whenever

should therefore be available at the same price as unbalanced seals of the same

The use of balanced seals is exclusively referred to with the inclusion of a step on Balancing can also be achieved by using a stationary design, which does not

seals offer higher operating reliability (DEPAC Type 196). These seals also fit
into those spaces designed for dynamic seals.

DIN specifications still show mechanical seals where the springs are located Springs within a slurry media can clog and cause premature failure of the seals.
in the pumped media. To prevent this, whenever technically possible, we recommend that the spring
parts are always arranged outside the pumped media (DEPAC

The standard does not mention that many dynamic seals damage the shafts/ DEPAC recommends that all seals be chosen in such a way that shafts or pro-

Seals made of several components are still recommended. Wherever possible, for ease of installation and reduction of
installation failures, cartridge designs should be used. The higher price
will only be noticed for the initial installation. The following repairs and spare part
prices will correspond with component seals.

THIS IS CONVINCING!
DYNAMIC, unbalanced seals are manufactured
for general applications. Typically, OEM companies
buy these seals in large quantities. The selection
of one or the other design depends on the pre-
ference of the OEM, the application and the
mounting requirements of the customer.

Important to know is that dynamic mechanical

seals with an O-ring or wedge construction can TYPE 159
damage the shaft through their axial movement. ● PTFE (graphite)-wedge
Therefore these seals should only be used in ● Direction of rotation independent
connection with shaft protecting sleeves.

Mechanical seal designs containing multiple

springs guarantee a more even face load,
avoiding unnecessary vibrations within the
equipment.

Stepped sleeves make the positioning of seals

easier. If this is not possible, retainer rings set
screwed to the shaft/sleeve are used for proper
positioning.

● L1KU measurements in connection
with stationaries DS1 and DS2 The suitable DEPAC stationaries and
their measurements can be found and

The use of rubber bellows has
many advantages:
● Premounted rotating unit
● No sticking or hang up of O-Rings
● No fretting of shafts/sleeves
● Optimal shock and vibration
dampening

All the shown DEPAC seal variations TYPE 170 A

can also be used with different DEPAC

THIS IS CONVINCING!
No mechanical seal lasts forever. To increase TYPE 270 P
sealing reliability sometimes double seals
● O-Ring design
have been installed. However, double seals
● Alternatives
cannot be considered as “safety” seals, since
both seals are installed at the same time – Welded bellows TYPE 296 P
and thus have the same running time. No – Rolled bellows TYPE 299 P
manufacturer can guarantee that the second
seal will hold after the first one has failed.

Even the “Disaster Bushings” required by

the oil industry (API) offer no leakage protection
after a seal failure.

Through controllable leakage, DEPAC’s TYPE 301 P

safety seals guarantee a high level of
process safety even after a possible ● Gland with 1/4” NPT flush and
seal failure. The emergency seal can be ad- quench connections
justed to an acceptable leakage rate and operated
until the next planned shut down. In extreme
conditions, where a double seal is required, an
additional safety seal can be offered as well.

The extra charge for a DEPAC safety

seal has no relation to the costs
occurred due to an unscheduled
production shut down!

● Rolled bellows design In some pumps, only a very short free

essential to compare L1 and L4 with the

Glands available on request as specials.
Double cartridge seals incorporating this
special DEPAC safety feature are avail-
able as well.

For additional protection against wear

on the seal sleeve a hard chrome

uids is most difficult and presents great result in a total plant shut down. For
demands on the seals. this reason seals must have a safety
seal, standstill seal, which can be acti-
vated at seal failure or time of seal
replacement.

The DEPAC solution

Type 370-S-60

The seal shown is a double seal design

that incorporates bearings according to
the standard DEPAC Type 370. It also
includes an additional, in series, safety
standstill seal.

In addition to the safety standstill seal

there is also an O-Ring loaded seal face
on the product side. This achieves a
rough pre-sealing that is independent
from ”abnormal“ radial shaft movements.

THIS IS CONVINCING! ● Motion tolerances
Especially with exceptionally large pumps, Axial ± 2 mm (0,08”)
agitators, mixers, autoclaves, filters,
Radial ± 1 mm (0,04”)
colanders, fermenters and similar
● Manual venting possible
equipment with large shafts, the shafts
tend to have considerable deflections. ● floating design
This applies to axial, radial and angular
movements.

Standard seals cannot handle these

extreme conditions.

In the past, additional bearings have often

been integrated in the seal to stabilize
the shafts. These designs are not only
significantly more expensive, but will
also fail immediately if the bearings are
damaged due to wear or overload.

DEPAC offers new seal designs with

“floating” faces, which will absorb the
extreme movement transferred to the seal
and will keep the face loading constant,
independent from the shaft movements.
The reliability of these seal applications
have therefore improved drastically.

THIS IS CONVINCING! specifications including inch sizes
For all applications where DIN shaft/flange
measurements are required, DEPAC offers
a seal system from which an optimal
mechanical seal can be chosen for every
application. For all other housing and
connecting dimensions, including inch sizes,
DEPAC will manufacture accordingly.
OUT
The flange, seal faces, as well as certain 180° turned
housing parts are inter-changeable. The user
can reduce the inventory level with a broad IN
exchange of parts to fit all applications.

This is called a modular system.

This system warrants also, as already

described, the stationary seal advantages nec-
essary to optimize the service life.

The DEPAC TS Thermosyphon system is a simple and

If for safety, technical and/or product reasons, the
barrier pressure must be higher than the medium
pressure, then an appropriate nitrogen buffer may
be applied to pressurize the barrier fluid.
