According to CoinMarketCap:

A Glimpse Into Crypto

CoinMarketCap is the first place that anyone (a newbie,
a crypto trader, a DeFi degen) looks for crypto prices.

2021 has been the year that Bitcoin hit its all-time high —
let’s take a look at what has brought people into the
market, and who they are!

02
What Brought People Into the
Crypto Markets?
Cryptocurrency (and Bitcoin in particular) has been in the headlines more often than
any other year. Let's take a look at which big events piqued the world's interest in
Bitcoin — and which events were less important for the masses.

Bitcoin

CoinMarketCap Users vs Bitcoin's Price Analysis:

Since the start of 2021, we found that

that positive news has an additive
effect on CoinMarketCap views,
whereas adverse news has a direct
and immediate negative effect on
CoinMarketCap views

Positive news needs to come in

batches to sustain the positive
momentum

Tesla accepting Bitcoin payments and

Coinbase going public brought new
people into the market

Notably, when Tesla ceased accepting

Bitcoin as payment in May 2021, a
substantial decline in the number of
CMC users followed

After El Salvador approved Bitcoin as

legal tender in September 2021, the
number of CMC users skyrocketed to
successive highs

03
Ethereum

CoinMarketCap Users vs Ethereum’s Price

Analysis:

Interest in Ethereum has grown

consistently since Q4 2020, but the
fastest growth was in the weeks leading
up to an upgrade

Some of the major events catalyzing the

renewed interest in the cryptocurrency
include the Berlin protocol upgrade and
London hard fork

In the last year, the number of Ethereum

enthusiasts grew by more than ten-fold
and is still rising rapidly

The latest and largest wave of interest

came just days after EIP-1559 passed
the 200,000 ETH burned threshold

04
Who Exactly Is Interested
in Cryptocurrency?

CoinMarketCap users are predominantly men, with a whopping 74% of our users
identifying as male, and just 26% identifying as female. This disparity is seen across
most financial sectors and likely has complex and multifactorial origins.

But some potential contributing factors could be due to higher risk aversion among
women, as well as a lack of financial education — particularly in developing
economies.

05
CoinMarketCap User Population Pyramid

25-34 is the biggest section —

and the majority are males, even
across all age ranges.

The closest it gets between

gender, the older the visitors are.

If there’s one insight that can be extracted from these charts, it’s that death isn’t
necessarily permanent in the crypto world. Many tokens have experienced an
extended period of essentially zero trading volume, only to burst to life weeks and
months later.

Small cap tokens tend to experience the largest relative change in trading volume.
Coins that were once well-hyped and sought-after can be abandoned just as
quickly, with many coins experiencing close to a 100% drop in trading volume over
a single quarter. Notably, almost all of the examples shown above are traded only
on less-established exchanges, which may be more prone to wash trading.

How many of these are in your portfolio?

Which Coins Grew Over the Past
Quarter...And Who Was Watching?

Token Name Growth Rate Daily Unique Users (Q3 End)

CumStar 0.5M%
SafeBlast 0.1M%
Wall Street Games 31K%
RichQUACK.com 12K%
Tiger King 10K%
ARPA Chain 8K%
Catgirl 7K%
DogeCola 7K%
Bloktopia 6K%
GreenTrust 5K%

Although Bitcoin, Ethereum and most other notable large cap coins experienced a
great deal of viewership growth in the last quarter, the absolute greatest change in
activity was reserved to a range of smaller assets.

At the top of the pile is CumStar, a meme coin that saw a staggering 500 thousand
percent growth in viewership in the last quarter. SafeBlast, Wall Street Games and
RichQUACK also fall under the meme/liquidity mining coin umbrella and experienced
tremendous growth as interest in meme coins reached a fever pitch.

Notably, Bloktopia’s native token found its way into ninth place, achieving 6 thousand
percent growth. It’s also arguably one of just two projects on the list that isn’t a meme
coin, the other being GreenTrust. Besides Bloktopia, all of these assets can be
considered small or medium cap tokens — indicating that dramatic growth is mostly
seen among lesser-known assets.

11
Which Countries Worldwide Care
About Which Coins?
We find that there is region-specific variation in the popularity of different assets,
but that all regions were heavily influenced by the same macro-trends.

Meme coins like Epic Hero 3D NFT, Safe Earn and SatoshiStreetBets Token
achieved global attention, whereas certain assets only garnered major attention in
specific regions, including Mello Token (India and Germany), Doge Rocket (Canada
and France) and SuperWhale (Vietnam).

Notably, 867 only generated a great deal of popularity in English speaking

countries, but had a much less pronounced audience elsewhere, demonstrating
marked differences in the preferences of different regions.
