Directions: Read the short story The Elevator and in the following diagram, analyze the story based on the 4 elements of suspense studied in class.
Write and explain 2 examples per category.
Foreshadowing
1.
One example of Foreshadowing in
this story is when he said that he
felt nervous in the elevator and
that something felt off about that
specific one. Like its implying how
there is something bad that’s
going to happen.
2.
Another example of
foreshadowing is when the story
says “Sometimes, he forced
himself to look away from them,
to the Emergency Stop button or
the red Alarm button. What would
happen if he pushed one of them?
Would a bell ring? Would the
elevator stop between floors? And
if it did, how would they get him
out?” and at the end of the story
he did get stuck in the elevator
because the lady pressed the stop
button.

Mystery
1.
Mystery can be found in this story
when the fat lady is staring at him,
because it causes you to think of
the reasons which she is staring at
him and makes you want to keep
reading to find out.
2.
Another example of mystery can
be when in the end it doesn’t tell
us exactly what happened so one
can only assume leaving us in the
dark and it became a mystery.
Dilemma
1.
The dilemma could be how the
main character was afraid of the
elevator and was never able to
beat his fear for the rest of the
whole story.
2.
Dilemma could also be present
when the main character was
afraid of the old lady and couldn’t
get it out of his head how she
there was something wrong about
her and he felt sad when his dad
didn’t give it a second thought
and just told his son to grow up
and stop acting like a child.
Reversal
1.
One could be when the lady
looked at him when normally
people in elevators don’t look at
others, but when the lady looked
at him it lead to a turn in the story
which led the main character to
be paranoid of her.
2.
Reversal can also be found when
the dad left him alone which led
to the old lady being able to talk
to him and press the STOP button
in the elevator which made him
most likely be killed or something
along the lines.
