Lesson Idea - Multimedia

Lesson Title Create Your Own Flower

Content Area Botany – 11th Grade

Content Standards SBO1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to analyze the
nature of the relationships between plant morphological structures
and anatomical structures, functions, and processes.
a. Ask questions to investigate and provide explanations about the basic
plant structures (i.e., major organs, tissues, and cells) in relation to their
functions.
(Clarification statement: Instruction for plant structures and functions should
address how plastic or rigid these can be in plants.)
Technology Standards 1.3 Knowledge Constructor
Students critically curate a variety of resources using digital tools to
construct knowledge, produce creative artifacts and make meaningful
learning experiences for themselves and others.

a. Students plan and employ effective research strategies to locate

information and other resources for their intellectual or creative
pursuits.

Integration Level Level 5: Expansion

Importance of Students are tasked with creating a video about a flowering plant. Students
Technology will be able to use anything they choose, some may use crafts, some may
use food, some may use design software for video games, etc. Students
have autonomy for this project, but one of the main components is filming
your creation and explaining the functions and structures of the plant function.
Students will use editing software to make their videos cohesive for
presentation.
Internet Safety and The biggest concern is going to be publishing the video. In order to combat
Student Privacy this problem, students can email me their video for presentation, so their
safety is preserved. Another concern could be using editing sites that ask for
names. I will remind students that if they need to make an account for a
website or software, they should only put their first name and the last letter of
their last name. Also, if the site is blocked on the school Wi-Fi, then it is not
appropriate to use. Students will get a handout that has been approved by
administration with the approved sites for video editing and a synopsis of the
video project for parents.
Universal Design Representation is supported by allowing students the autonomy to choose
Rationale how to create their flowering plant. Action and Expression is supported by
using multiple media for communication and using multiple tools for
construction and composition. Engagement is supported by optimizing choice
and autonomy via creation of their flowering plant.
Lesson Idea After I have informed students about the structure and the function of the
flowering plant, I will task them with a creation of a model of a flowering plant.
Students may use craft supplies, food or production software to create. Once
it is completed, students will film a 3 minute video explaining the structures
and the functions of each plant. They will use software that allows them to
edit their video into a cohesive design. This project will take a week to
complete, and students will be assessed on the accuracy of the structures,
the model created, and the video production. Students will better their video
editing skills for production and practice internet safety.
Students can pace themselves, so the lesson is differentiated because not
every student will be doing the same thing throughout the lesson. Student
learning is extended to a higher learning level by creating their own product,
both through a physical model and through a multimedia production. The
lesson will be concluded with a presentation of everyone’s video. Feedback
will be provided in the gradebook with constructive criticism.
Design Reflection Are there other technology tools that could further enhance this project?
The activity created will encourage creative thinking and promote digital
citizenship for my students. These are great skills for my classroom, but also
in their real-life world.
