Praxis Core Exam Analysis 2

Exam Requirements

In order to keep moving forward in my career as a teacher, I still have a few things I need

to do. First, I need to pass the PRAXIS exams with an above-average score. Passing the PRAXIS

exams is mandatory to attain a license to teach. The passing scores in Nevada for the Praxis

exams are 156 for Reading, 162 for Writing, and 150 for Mathematics. Once I pass the PRAXIS,

I want to transfer to UNLV and graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education.

Exam Preparation

Over the past few years of taking Education classes, different professors have shown me

different ways I can prepare for the Praxis Core Exam. Last year, I used Khan Academy and did

the practice tests there, and this semester I used the resources Professor Wyckoff gave us from

ETS to study. However, I did mostly study for the Math portion of the exam since I believed

that’s what I would need the most help on, but once I took the practice exams I saw that was not

the case.

Exam Results

In Math, I scored in the 87% range, which means that I am likely to pass the official

exam, this makes sense considering it’s what I studied most. In Writing, I scored in the 80%

range which also means that I’m likely to pass. I have always been pretty good at grammar so

even though I didn’t study a lot I was expecting to get a decent grade. Lastly, in Reading, I

scored in the 64% range which means I need improvement. In the past Reading and Writing have

been my best subjects but as the years have gone on that has clearly changed. For me, Reading

exams are hard because I feel like the questions are very open-ended and opinion-based. When I

read through the multiple-choice options after reading a passage I feel like there is more than one

right answer so I have to guess which one fits best instead of being fully confident in my answer.

Another reason I think this was my worst score is that a lot of the passages included vocabulary

and topics that were foreign to me.

Future Exam Preparation

I plan on using the free Khan Academy online program to study for the Official Praxis

Exam. This program personalizes your study material based on what you get on the practice

exams. It shows what you need the most improvement on and encourages you to study until you

get an above-average score. I believe this would be the best way for me to prepare for the exam

so that I don’t waste time studying what I already know, and instead focus on the areas that I

need to refine the most.
