Family/School Project Lesson Plan: Astrology Night

Objective: Students will be able to locate the moon, planets, and constellations in the sky
using the SkyView app on iPads. Students will be able to gain more information about the
moon, planets, and constellations in the sky by using the “learn more” feature within the
SkyView app.

Vocabulary:

Materials:

❏ “Astrology Scavenger Hunt” worksheet
❏ pencils/pens
❏ Assistive technology (as needed)

Procedure:

1. Introduction to lesson/Directions (2 minutes)


➢ Introduce lesson by explaining objective:
■ “We are so glad that you are all here to explore the sky with us tonight! Tonight
we are going to take a deeper look at what the sky above us really looks like.”
■ “Raise your hands if you can see the moon.”
● Wait for response
■ “Raise your hand if you can see the stars.”
● Wait for response
■ “Raise your hand if you have ever found a constellation in the sky!”
● Wait for response
■ “Tonight, we are going to do just that!”
■ “Students and families will be able to locate the moon, planets, and
constellations in the sky using the SkyView app on iPads. Students and families
will also be able to gain more information about the moon, planets, and
constellations in the sky by using the “learn more” feature within the SkyView
app.”
➢ Direct students and families to take a pencil/pen, worksheet and an iPad.
➢ Direct students and families to open the Skyview app on iPads.
➢ Explain how to use the SkyView app.
■ Direct the iPad camera toward the sky and move the iPad around to gain a view
of the sky above.
■ Through the app, explore the stars, planets, and constellations above.
■ The SkyView app uses location features to show the most accurate vision on the
sky based on the coordinates of the iPad’s location.
2. Activity (12 minutes)
➢ “Start by locating the moon. Once you have located the moon, click the “i” button to
learn more about the moon!”
➢ Answer the question on the worksheet. (How far away is the moon?”)
➢ “How many planets can you find? Once you find a planet, color it in on our
worksheet! Make sure to click the “i” button to learn more about it. Then, fill out the
information on the worksheet.”
➢ “Find as many constellations as you can. Once you find a constellation, click the “i”
button to learn more about it. Then, draw it below and fill out the information. Try to
find at least 5!”
3. Closure:
➢ Reiterate objective:
■ “Tonight you were able to locate the moon, planets and constellations in the sky
using the SkyView app. You also gained more knowledge about the moon,
planets, and the constellations in the sky by using the “learn more” feature
within the SkyView app.”
➢ Collect iPads, pencils/pens, completed worksheets.
■ Remind students that their completed worksheet goes in a raffle for a prize!

Assessment:

1. Students will fill out the “Astrology Scavenger Hunt” worksheet provided.
2. Students will have a discussion about what they found and what they learned about each.
Students will have a chance to share.

Differentiation:

● Students will be able to work alone, in partners, groups, or follow along with any of the
adults that will be assisting.
● Students may write their responses, use speech to text, or dictate responses and have others
write.
● Use of assistive technology as needed.
