III. Construct the correct chemical formulas of the following acids and bases. Briefly
explain the rules in constructing the chemical formula of acids and bases.

2. Cesium Hydroxide – CsOH

Explanation: This is a base. In writing the chemical formula of bases, you have to
write the metal element symbol Cs (Cesium), then followed by “OH”.

3. Sulfuric Acid – H2SO4

Explanation: This is an acid. In writing the chemical formula of acid, let’s begin to
put H (hydrogen). Write the ion or the stem (sulfur) then add “ate” (sulfurate). Look
for the common ion table of sulfurate ( SO2−¿
4
¿
). Since the carbonate has 2- charges
and hydrogen always has a charge of +1 we need to balance the charges by adding
the 2 subscript to hydrogen.

4. Carbonic Acid – H3CO3

Explanation: This is an acid. In writing the chemical formula of acid, let’s begin to
put H (hydrogen). Write the ion or the stem (carbon) then add “ate” (carbonate). Look
for the common ion table of carbonate (CO 2−¿3
¿
). Since the carbonate has 2- charges
and hydrogen always has a charge of +1 we need to balance the charges by adding
the 2 subscript to hydrogen.
