DESIGN AND RESEARCH

STATEMENT OF INTENT

I intend to design and construct a coffee table that will be practical and aesthetically pleasing. It will be designed to complement and match
any existing furniture in its designated room. I will achieve this by first identifying where my coffee table will sit and then adjusting materials,
shapes, angles, and colours to compliment and match its surrounding environment. I intend to implement my piece into a living room space.
In my current living room space, there are these small box tables that can be maneuvered around. They are unesthetic and are in dire need of
a replacement. A single prominent coffee table would undoubtedly connect the room together providing an accessible place for people to
place drinks, books, magazines, and your feet. This table will be accessible for anyone to use and will provide ample storage space for all the
living room essentials.

This project provides me with an opportunity to compose an item of interest to me. It allows me to express myself through the creative
features of my item, and freely design an item that directly reflects my skills and interests. I aim to adopt new wood working techniques to
improve the overall quality of my item. Pushing myself to learn new woodworking techniques will force me to develop my skills as a
woodworker. Skills such as pouring and measuring epoxy, finishing processes, structural analysis, grain matching, and inclusion of strip
lighting will be necessary for me to learn prior to manufacturing. All these aspects will be considered to create an elegant piece of furniture
that is aesthetic and functional.
LIMITATIONS

Cost Different qualities and rarities of timber will affect the overall cost of my design. I would like to predominantly use
American walnut in my design. This material is very expensive due to its scarceness in Australia. Although this wood
is expensive budgeting is not an issue for me. My parents are willing to cover all cost, as this is a meaningful piece of
furniture that can be kept in the family for many years to come. They are willing to spend up to $5000 on material
Time I only have around 3 terms to complete the production of my table, so thorough planning and careful consideration
will need to happen to ensure I can complete my design on time. The process of pouring and waiting for the epoxy to
cure will take time and will need planning to ensure that the process goes smoothly. Jointing, cutting, and finishing
will also need to be considered when time.
Skill This project will force me to learn new skills such as mixing and pouring epoxy. I am also planning to incorporate
under glow lighting in the epoxy. I will need to learn the best way to include this into my design so it can be used
sustainably.
Equipment at school My school has all the relevant equipment the I require to manufacture my coffee table. I will need to consider the
maximum width of the thicknesser when designing the manufacturing process for my table. My table is around
800mm wide, but the thicknesser is around 500mm. This is a challenge that I will need to solve in the manufacturing
stage.
Materials available There are a range of materials available to me. This is due to the fact that all the costing for my table will be covered
by my parents. This gives me a lot of freedom in the choice of my materials. So, I will only be sourcing the highest
quality material. Some places that I have…Ask sir best placesto purchase wood
CRITERIA FOR SUCCESS
In successfully completing this major work, it will need to meet these requirements and features to be successful:

- Must be an aesthetically pleasing piece, that has a diverse grain structure to catch the eye
- Project must work well with surrounding pieces of furniture and connect the room together
- Must provide storage space for living room essentials, blankets, books, magazines, and drinks
- Needs to be a practical piece of furniture that can be used daily
- Project must be created with high quality materials that will increase the longevity of the piece
- This piece must give the effect/illusion that it is floating and is not connected in the middle
- Must have light strips underneath epoxy so it can be turned on and off

The criteria will be assessed through the following questions:

Yes Somewhat No
Does the piece give the illusion of
floating?
Is there sufficient storage for living
room essentials?
Is the piece robust enough to with
stand constant use?
Is there a complex gran flow that will
catch the eye?
Does the epoxy have any bubbles or
defects in it?

PROCESSES

JOINTS
My table is a very simplistic design that does not involve too many
complicated processes. That’s why I am only using two types of joints
in my design. The first joint I am using is the dominoed mitre joint. I
chose this joint because it has a very sleek design that will allow me to
continue the grain throughout the corner. The use of dominos creates
a more secure and strong joint.
The second joint that I will be using is the rebate joint. I will be
implementing this on the underside of my table. This joint will be used
to hold most of the weight. This joint only needs to hold the piece of
wood in place because the piece is sitting upright at 90 degrees.

OTHER PROCESSES
The installation of lighting into the epoxy is a technique that I think will
increase the aesthetic value of the epoxy. This lighting will be used as
soft mood lighting, rather then party lights. This coffee table will sit in
the main living room in my
house, that is why I have chosen
to use darker tones that create
mood lighting rather strobing
party lights. The soft mood
lighting that this produces, will
augment the intricate swirls and
spirals of the epoxy
RESOURCES

FINISHES
The finish that I am going to use is called Rubio monocoat. This is a hard wax finish and was designed to be a flooring finish. I am choosing to use this finish
because it is a heavy-duty finish that has great durability. This is a factor that I must consider because my coffee table will be the centre of the room and it
will be used every day. Another feature that I love about this finish is the way it enhances the timber. Unlike wood stains, this finish does not change the
colour of the timber but enhances what is already there. This will work well with the complex grains structure of my Walnut. To conclude this finish will be
used because of its great durability, and ability to enhance natural grain structure.

ADHESIVES
My table has many domino joints that will require the use of PVA glue. This glue is the most effective choice for me because I do not require extreme
amounts of strength in these joints. I will also be using glue in every joint so if I chose a more expensive glue then it would get costly very quick.
The next Adhesive that I am going to incorporate into my design is Epoxy resin. This resin is going to be utilised in the form of an epoxy river. This river will
run down the centre of my table and will act as the large feature of my table. I am still to choose a colour that will best work in my living room.

TECHNOLOGIES
I will be using a range of technologies to manufacture my table, these include the orbital sander, table saw, domino machine, and CNC router. I will be
using the orbital sander for most of my sanding. My table has a plentiful amount of surface area, this makes the orbital sander the perfect tool for the
job. I will also purchase a buffing pad that I will use on the orbital sander to help me apply my finish. The next crucial technology is the table saw. This is
the machine that I will be doing most of my cutting on. This machine removes a lot of the human error and enable perfect uniform cuts every time. This
is important if I want my table to be finished to a high standard. The Domino machine is also going to
be one of my most used tools. I will be reinforcing every joint with dominos to increase their overall
strength. I will be implementing them into every mitre joint and they will also be used to joint my
smaller pieces to make my tabletops. The final technology that I will be using is the CNC router. This
router will be used to carve out the river for my epoxy to lay in. I am using this method because I will be
able to make any shape I want carved in as my river. It also is extremely accurate and precise; this is
important to create a thorough piece that is finished to a high standard. To conclude I will be using a
range of technologies to ultimately achieve the most delightful quality table.
