MTCNA – EXERCICES MODULE 3

Module 3 – QOS in RouterOS

In these exercises, you will learn how to manage bandwidth in RouterOS.

Exercice 3.1 – Simple Queue

1. In the main menu, click on "Queue", then in the "Simple Queues" tab
add a queue
2. Name this queue LAPTOP
3. Use the IP of your Laptop as Target-Address
4. Set as limits 2M download and 1M upload

1. From the Winbox menu -> tools -> torch and start it on "ether1"
2. On your laptop, access the site www.speedtest.net and check the
result obtained
3. Repeat the test and check the "simple queue Traffic" tab
4. From the main menu of Winbox, open Tools-> Torch. Start Torch on
the "ether1" interface and repeat the speed test on speedtest.net .

Locate the connection and note the IP address of the speedtest server.

Now you need to update the LAPTOP queue to limit traffic only to the
speedtest server

1. Run the speedtest.net test again to verify that the bandwidth is limited.

2. This time run the speedtest.net test on another server and check that
there is no speed limit

3. Invert in the LAPTOP queue the IP addresses in Target-address and Dst-

address. Run the speedtest.net test again on the 1st server. Limits should
work, but download and upload speeds should have changed

4. Reverse the values of Target-Address and DST-Address

Exercice 3.2 – Bandwidth Test

1. Download the "bandwidth test" tool from www.mikrotik.com

2. Run a TCP test to your router. “Bandwidtch server” is enabled by default

on your router, but it requires authentication. Check the server
configuration in Winbox (tools -> BTest Server) before running the test

While the bandwidth test is running, create a 2nd queue for this
traffic and limit your laptop to all destinations.
Call this queue LAPTOP2 and set as limit 128k upload and 128k
upload

Exercice 3.3 – Priority of trafic

1. To create more advanced bandwidth management, it is possible to
manage priorities. Create a queue with the download and upload of 2M.,
Name it "TOTAL".

Put this new Queue as "parent" for the 2 queues already created (LAPTOP
and LAPTOP2) - Set higher priority to the LAPTOP queue (5 is greater than
8)

Now you should have a queue structure:

Simultaneously start the speedtest test and the router bandwidth test.
