Title of Lesson: Syncopation Day 3 (Respond)

Class/Grade Level 7th & 8th Grade Chorus Teacher: Jordan S. Allen

Central Focus:
The central focus of the learning segment is syncopation. The purpose of this is for students to
be able to identify syncopated rhythms by reading standard notation, transcribing it into
standard notation and then through the use of a dictation.

NJ Standards

1. MU:Pr4.2.8b When analyzing selected music, sight-read in treble or bass clef simple
rhythmic, melodic, and/or harmonic notation.
2. MU:Pr5.3.E.IIIa Develop, apply, and refine appropriate rehearsal strategies to address
individual and ensemble challenges in a varied repertoire of music.
Lesson Objectives
1. Students will be able to Student in 7th & 8th grade chorus will be able to hear and
dictate the rhythm of the melody being played on the piano.
2. Given seven minutes and thirty seconds of class time student will sing the sight
reading exercise on the board at sight in there given vocal parts with a success rate of
80%.

(5 min.) <Introduction>
1. Have students grab their choir folders. Take attendance allow for students to
run to the restroom and do the daily check in and see how the students are
doing.
(20 mins) <Warm-Ups>
1. Start with the Daily Stretch to get the body loose and moving
2. Breathing Exercise:
a. Have the students repeat back one measure rhythm on “shh”. Three
different rhythms
3. Resonance Exercise:
a. Viva Vi (start in D major to A major)
4. Phrasing Exercise:
a. Monomo (start in e minor to g minor)
5. Range Exercise:
a. I love to Sing (D major to F major)
6. Cool Down Exercise:
a. Play a C# for Do and have the students find So
7. Then continue to have the students sing the pentatonic scale on solfege going
down to Do (C# major down to G#major)

(15 mins) <Sight Reading Exercise>


4. Using the same sight reading example from Day 1 & 2 add in the solfege part
for the alto line and have the class sight read both parts and then split the class
in half and have them read through it in sections.
< Learn the 2nd chorus for “Draw the Circle Wide”>
5. Start with the Soprano I Section in pick up to measure 27
a. Followed by the baritones
b. Soprano II’s
c. Tenors/Altos
b. After each of the sections have learned their parts have them choose and
test out who they want to sing against and have the other sections judge
and evaluate.

(10 mins) <Dictation>


6. For the last ten minutes of class have the class take out their worksheet they
picked up on the way into class
7. Let the students know that they will be using that page for some dictation fun
a. Explain that the notes on the bottom of the page are all of the
possible notes that could be used in the dictation
b. Play the dictation 3 times having the students do it by themselves
c. On the fourth time have students tap the keep the beat and have
them clap out the rhythm they heard together.
d. Have students adjust as you play it two more times then have them
turn it in.

Assessment

- Student will submit their notecards with their dictation on it for a grade.

Accommodations
- Students will be given the rhythm possibilities on the board to choose from in
their dictation.
- Students for the last two play throughs of the dictation they would be allowed to
work with a partner to check their answers.
