1. Sodium hydroxide dissolves in water releasing so much heat that it heats up the container. The
dissolution process of sodium hydroxide in water is said to be endothermic or exothermic?

 The dissolution of sodium hydroxide in water is an exothermic process. When you

dissolve NaOH in pure water, the process is highly exothermic, but as the
concentration of NaOH increases, the process becomes less exothermic and
eventually near the saturation point it becomes endothermic (it becomes less
favorable for more NaOH to dissolve).

2. In 70% isopropyl alcohol, what is the volume of water and the volume of isopropyl alcohol? Which
one is the solvent?
 With the total solution of 500 mL you can say that is 100% of your solution. There is
70% isopropyl alcohol. Therefore, you have 350 mL of isopropyl alcohol and 150
mL of water added in the total solution. That’s why the solute is the isopropyl
alcohol and our solvent is the water.

3. Assuming the solubility of NaCl in water is 1.0g/mL at 298K. How many grams of NaCl will be
needed to make 1.0 L of water saturated?

 g = M x L x molar mass
g = (1.0g/mL) (1 L) (58.44g/mol)
g = 58.44 g

4. Soft drinks contain dissolved carbon dioxide. When a bottle of soft drink is opened, CO bubbles
2

come out. Did the solubility of CO decrease or increase when the cap was removed? Why?
2

 Opening the bottle of carbonated beverage reduces the pressure of the gaseous
carbon dioxide above the beverage. The solubility of CO2 is thus lowered, and
some dissolved carbon dioxide may be seen leaving the solution as small gas
bubbles. At this point, the beverage is supersaturated with carbon dioxide and,
with time, the dissolved carbon dioxide concentration will decrease to its
equilibrium value and the beverage will become “flat.”

5. Why does sugar dissolve faster in hot coffee than in cold drinks?

 Sugar dissolves faster in hot water than it does in cold water because hot water
has more energy than cold water. When water is heated, the molecules gain
energy and, thus, move faster. As they move faster, they come into contact with
the sugar more often, causing it to dissolve faster.
