1
FAMILIARIZATION WITH LABORATORY APPARATUS
IN GENERAL CHEMISTRY
OBJECTIVE:
To name, draw and give the functions of the different apparatus used in general chemistry.

THEORY:
Each of us is a scientist in our own way. And a scientist has a workplace called the
laboratory. The purpose of the chemistry laboratory is to provide a place for students where
practical knowledge and comprehensive understanding of chemistry principles may transpire. Like
any other workplace, a laboratory holds the tools of the trade. The apparatus found in any given
laboratory will vary based on their dimensions and applications. A wide range of chemistry
laboratory equipment can be utilized for conducting every type of experiments in school or
university level.
In conducting chemistry laboratory classes, the various types of equipment present provide
its worth in enhancing the critical-thinking skills of the students. This laboratory equipment
comprises the various materials, instruments, facilities used to conduct experiments in different
branches of physics. They are needed and used in schools, colleges, research laboratories and many
other places where chemistry is the subject of study. With the aid of these instruments, the different
principles and concepts in various disciplines of chemistry are tested and proven.

Experimental procedures in a chemistry laboratory class are made easy with the use of an
appropriate measuring device and if one also knows the functions and how these equipment are
manipulated. In addition, engagement in chemistry laboratory activities through hands-on
manipulation develop familiarity with the experimental methods upon which science largely
depends.

Familiarization with the chemistry equipment includes learning how to take good care of
the instruments. If a piece of equipment is broken or is not functioning properly, it should be
reported immediately to your laboratory instructor.

PROCEDURE:

1. Look around a chemistry laboratory to find the different apparatus used in chemistry
classes.

2. Complete the next table with the missing information.

3. Use a ruler to draw scientific drawings.

LABORATORY APPARATUS IN GENERAL CHEMISTRY

Name of Drawing Function or Use

Apparatus
Safety goggles are required to wear
in all chemistry labs. It is used to
protect us in danger of eye
Safety goggles irritation and possibly blindness
in the case of an accident.

Latex gloves is used to protect us

when there is a possibility of
chemicals spilling onto our
hands.
Latex gloves
and Lab apron A lab apron or coat can also
prevent injury in case of spills or
splashes.
Beakers are useful as a reaction
container or to hold liquid or solid
samples. It is used for mixing,
stirring, and heating chemicals.
Beaker Most beakers have spouts on their
rims to aid in pouring.

Erlenmeyer flasks are used to

contain liquids and for mixing,
heating, cooling, incubation,
filtration, storage, and other
Erlenmeyer liquid-handling processes. Their
Flask/Conical slanted sides and narrow necks
Flasks allow the contents to be mixed by
swirling without the risk of spills,
which is useful for titrations and for
boiling liquids.
A Florence flasks is a type of flask
used as an item of laboratory
glassware. It can be used as a
container to hold solutions of
Florence chemicals. It can also easily be
flasks/Boiling capped by rubber or glass stoppers.
Flasks

Test tubes are widely used by

chemists to hold, mix, or heat
small quantities of solid or liquid
chemicals, especially for
Test tubes qualitative experiments and assays.
Their round bottom and straight
sides minimize mass loss when
pouring, make them easier to clean,
and allow convenient monitoring of
the contents.
A watch glass is just a round piece
of glass that is slightly
concave/convex (think of a lens). It
can hold a small amount of liquid or
Watch Glasses solid. They can be used for
evaporation purposes and also
can function as a lid for a beaker.

A crucible is a small clay cup made

of a material that can withstand
extreme temperatures. They are
used for heating substances and
Crucibles come with lids.

A lab funnel is just like any other

funnel except that it was designed
to be used in a laboratory setting.
Used for pouring liquids or
Funnels powder through a small opening
and for holding the filter paper in
filtration. They can be made of
plastic or glass and can have either
a short stem or a long stem,
depending on what they are needed
for.
Granulated cylinders are long,
slender vessels used for
measuring the volumes of liquids.
Granulated It comes in many sizes, the smaller
Cylinders they are in diameter, the more
specific the volume measurements
will be.
It is used to measure an exact
volume of liquid. These flasks are
considered the most precise way
of measuring liquids as opposed to
Volumetric beakers or cylinders.
flasks

These are small glass tubes with

narrow tips on one end and a rubber
bulb on the other. They suck up
liquid that can then be squeezed
out in small drops. These can be
Droppers used to add an indicator to a
solution about to be titrated.

It is used in all measuring an

exact volume of liquid and placing
it into another container.

Pipettes

A buret is used for extremely

accurate addition of liquid. By
adjusting the stopcock, the amount
of liquid that is released can be
Burets slowed to a drop every few seconds.
It is also the one of the most
accurate tools in the lab.
The ring stand is used to suspend
burets, beakers, flasks, crucibles,
etc. above other containers or, in
some cases, a heat source. Always
Ring stands, make sure everything is clamped to
ring and the stand tightly. When clamping
clamps glass, be careful not to shatter the
glass.

Laboratory tongs are large pincers

for grasping and lifting vessels of
heat-resistant material used in
high temperature chemical
Tong and reactions. Forceps differ in shape
forceps are designed to pick up
laboratory items including, hot
evaporating dishes, beakers,
crucibles, and other laboratory
apparatuses.

Spatulas and scoopulas are for

scooping solid chemicals. They are
typically used to scoop a chemical
out of its original container onto
Spatulas and a weigh boat so that it can be
scoopulas weighed on a balance.
A laboratory thermometer is used
for measuring the temperature of
liquids. It can be made of glass or it
can be a thermocouple made of
different metals.
Thermometers

A Bunsen burner is a laboratory

instrument that can be used to
provide a single, continuous
flame by mixing gas with air in a
controlled fashion. These both must
Bunsen Burner be adjusted to get an ideal flame for
heating purposes. The burner is lit
with a striker.

A balance is used to weigh

chemicals. The chemicals are
always in some form of container
and never placed directly on the
balance.
