Question Description of Question Marks CO

1 (a) Write the names of various types of irrigation schemes. With neat 05 CO1,2
sketch explain storage irrigation scheme.
(b) With a neat sketch, explain the types of soil-water and limits of soil- 05 CO1,2
water contents. How do you use these to find out frequency of
irrigation?

-- OR --
(c) Enumerate the data collected from geological surveys and 05 CO1,2
hydrological surveys for reservoir planning. How do you use this
information?

2 (a) Explain Brune’s method for calculation of life of a reservoir. 05 CO2,3

(b) A gravity dam has a base width = 50m, u/s water depth = 60m and 05 CO2,3
tail water depth=5m.
Find the uplift pressure force if there is no drainage gallery.
Also find the % reduction in uplift if drainage gallery is provided at
8m from heel.
-- OR --
(c) A homogeneous section of an earthen dam has top width of 8.0 m 05 CO3,4
and U/S and D/S slopes of 4 : 1 and 3 : 1 respectively. A horizontal
filter of 40 m length is provided from the toe of the dam inside. The
height of the dam is 30 m with 2 m of free board. Assuming
coefficient of permeability of the soil used in the dam as 1.5 x 10-4
cm/s. determine the seepage flow per unit length of the dam. Also
plot the phreatic line.

3 (a) Explain salient features of Bligh’s theory. 05 CO3,4

--OR--
(b) Explain :( i) Ogee spillway (ii) Radial gates 05 CO2,3
(c) Design an unlined canal using Lacey’s theory for a discharge of 20 05 CO2,3

m3/s if mean diameter of silt particles is 0.32 mm.

4 (a) Design a lined canal of trapezoidal section with rounded corners for a 05 CO3,4
discharge of 85 m3/s at a slope of 25cm/km. The c/s slopes are
1.5H:1V, manning’s N= 0.014 , B/D ratio is 8 and maximum
permissible velocity is 2m/s.
(b) With neat sketches explain : (i) Stepped falls 05 CO2,3
(ii) Canal escapes
