1. HECAS (Higher Education Centralised Admissions)


• 2022 applications for: UBD, UNISSA, UTB, Politeknik, MOE overseas scholarship.
• Announced on local news in early February - same week that results come out.
• PREPARE EARLY - only 2-3 weeks to deadline, so it can be stressful.
• hecas.moe.gov.bn
• To prepare:
a. Choose your university & your course. Know the grade requirements.
b. Apply to local institutions, EVEN IF you apply for overseas and scholarship.
c. Verification of certificates (see point 2 below)
• Hearing back about your HECAS applications
− MOE Overseas Scholarship/ Loan Scheme - MMI interviews start call in April. Prepare
and use the MMI questions provided in Career Centre website. There may be an
additional ‘Leadership camp’ used to vet candidates for MOE scholarship.
− UBD - Informed through email around July.
− UTB - Informed through HECAS in late June.

2. Stamping and verification of certificates


• Depending on how many applications, make 2-3 photocopies of:
🗸 I/C 🗸 O level certificates 🗸 AS level certificates 🗸 For UNISSA: SSRU certificate
NOTE: School appointments, competitions, etc. NOT necessary.
• In January, bring them to the library foyer and stamp them with school stamp labelled
‘Certified True Copy of Original’.
• SOP:
a. Only enter school if fully vaccinated + Code green + Wear mask.
b. Wait in line. One person at a time to stamp photocopies. Social distance.
c. DO NOT remove the stamp from its station.
d. Write b.p. ( bagi pihak ) on the stamped documents. ( Refer to sample )
e. Place stamped documents in a plastic folder labelled with
your name, tutor group and phone number.
f. Deliver it to dropbox outside the rooms of assigned tutors (see list below).
g. Give teachers time to sign - collect after a minimum of 1 week.
h. Please leave the school premises directly after dropping off your documents.

• NOTE: Once your A level results are out, you will need to get those photocopies stamped
and signed, too.
• NOTE: Some universities want the certificates in softcopy, so you need to scan and upload
- CHECK.

3. If you fall short of A level grades, there are options of:


• retaking A levels in June,
• Unibridge Programme at UBD,
• UTB-SP,
• HNDs, Foundation Degrees, etc.
• There are other roads to lead you to a Bachelor’s Degree! Find out!

4. Update your referees of your plans.


• Email your Student Career Profile today if you have not done so.
• If you are unsure of your direction/ course still, they will submit a general reference. But
if you did not email them or inform them of anything, you will NOT have any reference.

5. MOE Overseas Scholarship & SBPP Loan Scheme - Course Lists


• Apply to the course now. Do not wait until the results come out. Use offer letter to apply
for scholarship / loan during HECAS. Must apply for course with the EXACT title, e.g.
Agricultural Technology is NOT Agricultural Sciences. If in doubt, ask MOE Scholarship
section first.
• Check if you need a transcript ( a history of your academic results in MS ). Request through
Career Centre. UK/ UCAS – Will not need transcript.
• NOTE : If you do receive scholarship, be aware there may be preliminary payments such
as deposit to university, country’s Student Visa payments etc. which needs to be made
by your parents. These can be between hundreds to a few thousand dollars.

6. Accreditation of courses / qualification


• Needed for ALL overseas institutions. To ensure your qualification will be recognized by the
Brunei government.
• Do this first before paying any deposits ( if you plan to self-fund your study )

7. UCAS application
• If you want to send your UCAS application in 2021, pay and submit by 15 December 2021.
• School Deadline for all other UCAS applications is 16 January 2022 – MS Career Centre
will not entertain any new applications after this deadline.
• After you pay and submit :
a. Your application will first be checked by MS Career Centre. Keep checking your
email - if it requires editing, MS Career Centre will return your application, you
make the necessary edits and send it back.
b. MS Career Centre will attach your teacher’s reference and predicted grades and,
finally, send your complete application to UCAS.
c. No need to send your A level results to UCAS or universities - UCAS will
automatically receive your results from CAIE.
d. Universities’ replies can come at different times - December, January, February.
Some universities ask for online interviews. Prepare well for them. For competitive
courses and universities these are often subject and application based questions.
e. If you receive offers from more than one university, you will need to make one firm
choice and one insurance through your UCAS tracking application.
f. You can use these conditional offers for scholarship applications.

8. Other overseas scholarships


• BSJV ( February )
• Embassy scholarships - check their social media when to apply.
• Yayasan Sultan’s Scholar - Nomination from school. 3As + A in O level BM + offer from top
ranking world university. If you want to stand a chance at this scholarship you need to apply
to a couple of top world universities this year. Cikgu Rosita will contact you.
• MINDEF Supreme Commander of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces - Nomination from school.
3As and fulfill criteria (check website). Cikgu Yani will contact you.

9. Self-funded overseas study


• Look for partial scholarship opportunities
• Seek accreditation (see point no.6)
• Malaysia - Affordable. Quite a number of UK uni with campus in Malaysia, can still study in
the UK campus, and receive the UK uni degree.

10. Education agencies


• e.g. Findlay, HRDS, James Hon, B Lau, MEG
• Useful services – e.g. some know about tuition scholarships to certain courses.
• BUT only AFTER you have decided on your universities.
• Reminder : NEVER pass your friends’ information/ contact numbers to education agencies
without their consent.

11. Personal Development


• While waiting, make use of the time - increase your general knowledge of current affairs,
participate in NGO causes, develop skills.
• Develop your socioemotional skills, attributes and make yourself marketable. Join online
courses ( check under Resources in Career Centre website )
• Start this December and throughout university.
• Most important to start with the right attitude : Adaptable, Proactive, Resilient, Integrity.
