Theorizing untranslatability: Temporalities and ambivalence in colonial literature of Taiwan and

Korea

1. The thesis statement in this paper is, “I argue that the multi-linguistic experience

reflects the interior ambivalence of the colonized, and how they were caught in between

tradition and the modern. This ‘neither here nor there’ positioning produces

ambivalence and contradictions in one’s being, compelling one to act towards

negotiating the difference from the colonization.”

2. I find that the thesis statement is strong in this paper since the thesis statement shows

the author’s argument.

3. The way the author supports his argument is that he uses different articles and

implements text from those articles into his paper.

4. The category of evidence this falls under is Analogical Evidence. Because the author

refers to or other authorities on the matter to quote.

5. The evidence used in this paper is strong.

6. The thing I can take from this article is the way the author cited in the text after he used

evidence from another paper.
