1. Autumn

Autumn is always too early.

The peonies are still blooming, bees

are still working out ideal states,

and the cold bayonets of autumn

suddenly glint in the fields and the wind

rages.

What is its origin? Why should it destroy

dreams, arbors, memories?

The alien enters the hushed woods,

anger advancing, insinuating plague;

woodsmoke, the raucous howls

of Tatars.

Autumn rips away leaves, names,

fruit, it covers the borders and paths,

extinguishes lamps and tapers; young

autumn, lips purpled, embraces

mortal creatures, stealing

their existence.
Sap flows, sacrificed blood,

wine, oil, wild rivers,

yellow rivers swollen with corpses,

the curse flowing on: mud, lava, avalanche,

gush.

Breathless autumn, racing, blue

knives glinting in her glance.

She scythes names like herbs with her keen

sickle, merciless in her blaze

and her breath. Anonymous letter, terror,

Red Army.

Musim gugur selalu terlalu dini.

Peony masih mekar,

lebah masih bekerja di luar keadaan ideal,

dan bayonet musim gugur yang dingin

tiba-tiba berkilauan di ladang dan angin mengamuk.

Apa asal usulnya? Mengapa harus menghancurkan mimpi,

punjung, kenangan?

Alien memasuki hutan yang sunyi,

kemarahan maju, menyindir wabah;

asap kayu, lolongan parau dari Tatar.

Musim gugur merobek daun, nama,

buah, menutupi batas dan jalan, memadamkan lampu dan lancip;

muda musim gugur, bibir ungu, pelukan makhluk fana,

mencuri keberadaan mereka.

Getah mengalir, darah yang dikorbankan,

anggur, minyak, sungai liar,

sungai kuning membengkak dengan mayat,

kutukan mengalir di: lumpur, lahar,

longsoran salju, membesut.

Musim gugur yang terengah-engah, balap,

biru pisau berkilauan dalam pandangannya.

Dia menamai nama-nama seperti herbal dengan ketajamannya sabit,

tanpa ampun dalam kobaran apinya dan nafasnya.

Surat anonim, teror,

pasukan Merah

2. connotation is the baggage a word or idea drags around. The word "baggage" often has a negative
connotation. If you say someone has baggage, unless they're at the airport, you mean the person is
lugging around some drama. Some words, like "awesome birthday cake," have a positive connotation.
Here are some other examples:

"Long before the Christian era, people celebrated the winter equinox. Let's remove religious
connotations and call it the winter equinox break." (Washington Post)

"I kind of hate that word 'collector' because it has such a financial investment connotation." ( Los
Angeles Times)

"Bryan has instead always opted for baseball caps, a fashion item that carries few connotations other
than a sense of casualness and youth." (The Guardian)
Denotation is literally the word for a word! It's the literal meaning of a word, a gesture, or any mark,
without emotion. No strings attached. The root of denotation means, "make a note of." Let's make a
note of these examples:

"In fact, the 'Parks and Recreation' alum said he didn't know the word's medical denotation." (Los
Angeles Times)

"Mr. McDougall gave a strange charge to a gesture that, in Baroque dance, probably has a simple
denotation." ( New York Times)

3. The Little Rose Tree

by Rachel Field

Every rose on the little tree

Is making a different face at me!

Some look surprised when I pass by,

And others droop—but they are shy.

These two whose heads together press

Tell secrets could never guess.

Some have their heads thrown back to sing,

And all the buds are listening.

I wonder if the gardener knows,

Or if he calls each just a rose?
