Application Guidelines

Joint preparation:
The substrates must be clean, even, dry, and free of dust, oil, grease and any contaminants
that could harm bonding. If the substrates need to be cleaned, use MEK, acetone or other
grease remover. We recommend to clean concrete with a metal brush.

Priming:
The Primer should be applied to prepared surface before installation of backer rod. For
obtaining a clean and neat finish, masking tape shall be applied on both the edges of the joint
before applying the primer.

Back-up Material:
A bond breaking backing rod needs to be inserted into all movement joints to avoid a
three-sided adhesion. Use of a backing rod will ensure proper joint depth and will facilitate the
right formation. The diameter of the backing rod shall be at least 20% larger but not greater
than 33% of the joint width. This will ensure that the backer rod remains in compression and
in place during sealant installation. For static and joints where the depth is not sufficient for
the use of the backing rod, a bond breaking tape may be applied instead.

Mixing:
PS-500 is available in a ready to mix container, with all the components packed in a single tin.
The material shall be mixed thoroughly with a slow speed drill (300-400 rpm) fitted with a
Flat bladed paddle for 2-3 minutes till a uniform colour and consistency is achieved. The side
and base of the container should be periodically scrapped down with a palette knife to ensure
all the curing agent has completely blended with the base compound. Failure to completely
disperse both components will result in uncured sealant.

Application:
PS-500 may be applied using a manual or pneumatic gun. If the gun is not available, the
sealant can be applied using a scrapper after pouring the material into the joint. After applica-
tion, use a putty knife to smooth the joint using soapy water. On vertical application, fill the
joint twice or thrice to avoid any sagging. Sealant must be firmly tooled against the joint sides
to ensure adequate adhesion. It is recommended to use masking tape where exact joint lines
or neat lines are required. Remove the tape within the curing time.

Cleaning:
Tools should be cleaned with cleaner no. 2 before the sealant has completely cured. After
curing, abrasion is necessary.
