My topics is determinants of family integration among marchant seaman.

what is
family integration ?it is how anybody or anyone connected or integrated with his
family or in touch with his family.and here determinants means some variable
whether independent or dependent variable which might affect the family
integrity of some degree.
here focus of my study is on seamans family integrity ,their duration of stayed
away from home for occupational purpose ,what are those variable affect the
integrity, what is the degree of effect, which variable affects more. also we focus
on duel life style of seaman ,I means shore and in sea .we know when they stay
away ,their family have to move without him ,my study also focused on it as well
as on the upgrading communication system onboardship which also affects
significantly or not in the term of seamans family integrity.
So there the objective of my study. these are mainly to discuss about seamans
family integrity ,analyze the degree of integrity as well as analyze of determinants
affects the integrity ,comparison between those determinants .and at the end to
find something which might improve the integrity.
Here I want to say some word on seamans family integrity.as the stay in sea they
meet lack of social relationship,they also can not perform any social events.most
of the ship doesn’t have such kind of onboard communication facilities also
sailing,they are derprived from their family.
Here the conswquensec the faces due to stay away of home for a long time…..his
wife has to done all household works.when he returns its tough for him to cope
up with his family ,socoity again
For the purpose of my thesis,I have made a research design.

First part is literature review. for the purpose of the study I have gone
through lots of report books magazine journal internet. i found many writer
wrote on it. the main thing I found from those review is how seamans family
moves on with him or without him. how they are integrated ,what the factor
or determinant affect the integrity. from these I point out those determinant
and divided into two part like dependent or predicted variable and
independent or predictor variable. Based upon them I made some
questionaries .here
The data used in his study were obtained using a survey instrument given to an
available sample of persons employed as merchant seaman .In all,344
questionnaires were distributed .Of these 284 were distributed to members of
the four major online platforms of India ,Italy ,Philippine and Bangladesh .There
were 60 questionnaires distributed to non-platformed seamen .These were
distributed by second mates on four ships .The subjects were given instructions to
complete the questionnaires .A total of 132 usable questionnaires were returned.

There were 6 possible responses

Here dependent variable is family integration, for that in quesnaries I put three
option as follows
(A)When I am at home I wish I was at sea;

(B)Seamen do not have as close as relationship with their family as men who have
a shoreside job.

(C)There are times when I am at home that I feel like a stranger or an outsider.

There were 6 possible responses to each question ranging from strongly agree to
strongly disagree .

The highest possible score in each case was 18 indicating strong disagreement
with each statement or high family integration and the lowest possible score was
3 indicating strong agreement with each statement or low family integration.

From the pie chart we can see the score

From these I got average score of 10.71 which indicates e good family integrety
but against family integrity of those who works on shoreside its comparatively
very low.but a large mean deviation indicates sifnificant negetive integrity.
They were also given some additional questionnaires regarding other probable
independent variables seemed to be affecting the family integration .Examining
those variable gives us a good idea about the direction of the research .score

Here first determinant months per yeat at sea.here we can see the variation of
sea time.of them some have 4 years,some 10 years like this.

Then regarding community size of their family lived we can find 4 different result.

43 of them participate in religos matter regularly

28 participant don’t have any children

90 of them are officer

61 of them have permanent job,others have temporary

Only 11 participant have shipboard ship shore communication facilties

From all the data value,to find the significance of each determinants I have
followed the analyze system known as stepwise multiple regression system.its a
system where one determinants value is eliminated one aty a time and check the
dependents coefficient,one by one I do the same thing.by this way we can
determine which variable affects more.its done by a data analyzer software where
I put values of all indpndnt determianant against the value or score I got from
dependent variable ,I mean family integration.i assumed a significant value of .

More the value,more co related……..where minus means with the increase of that
determinants value, integrassion decreasesd.then for cross check the software
automatically determines coefficient of betas.it actually shows me with increase
of one unit value of any variable how much the rate of coefficient changes .here
Examining the beta coefficients we find some similar patterns with the zero-order
correlations .The most important occupational determinant is months at
sea(beta=-.20),followed in predictive power by shipboard status(beta=.17),length
of trips(beta=-.16),years a seaman(beta=-.15) and sailing on a single
ship(beta=-.10).
Extra-occupational factors seem to be equal in predictive strength to those
variables directly related to the degree and nature of participation in the
occupation .The strongest influence is associated with religious
participation(beta=.22) and organizational membership(beta=.11)were also
relatively influential .Of less importance were living in the same community as
raised ,the direction of the beta are consistent with our expectations
.Organizational membership and living in the same community as raised are not
statically significant.

This research has shown that the longer the seaman spends at sea ,the less
integrated he is into his family .His family integration in a sense mediated by
certain social characteristics .The merchant seaman’s level of family integration is
also a product of his religious and organizational participation.

So if the duration of spending time at sea per year can be lessen ,the family
integration will be more .The shipping company can take step to give more
vacation per year than before .They should also concern about permanent job
which can give the seafarer guaranty of their job which saves their time for
looking for job, besides they should provide pension and insurance facilities to
seafarer to ensure a secured future for them and for their families. International
standards should be taken to solve job crisis and job security.Seaman’s family
should be given life security ,medical security and all the facilities required to live
well when he is in sea ,this can be done by shipping company or any by any
welfare organization stand for seafarers.
But we have seen a great deficiency in shipboard ship-shore communication
facilities .Most of the ship still are not equipped with good communication
facilities such as free wifi .If this facilities can be available on every ship ,it will
help seafarer to keep in touch with his family and community all the time which
may also increase their family integration ,also he could try his best to solve his
family problem ,he can be connected with his community through which he can
get help for his family which might not be done by his family members.
