Dear Parent/ Guardian,

I hope this Letter finds you well.

On arriving back to school after the Christmas break on the 6 th of January 2022, students will start to
think about their classroom Bases Assessments 1 (CBA 1) in Science. This will open with a small
discussion in class and an introductory lesson on the 7 th of January. The CBA will take place over
three weeks, beginning on the 10th of January.

The CBA’s were introduced to allow students the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of
different concepts. To show development of their skills and ability which would not be possible in an
exam situation. The students will undertake CBA 1 in 2 nd year in the form of an Extended
Experimental investigation.

The students will be involved in a wide range of activities including, oral presentation, written work,
teamwork, designing experiment and thinking like a scientist.

The grading system for CBA1 is as follows:

o Exceptional
o Above Expectations
o In Line with Expectations
o Yet to Meet Expectations

The Topic for this CBA is Chemical reactions and students get to come up with their own research
question they wish to investigate. Students will get to work on the CBA in each of the 3 Science
classes over the next 3 weeks. The students will engage in group work and individual work and over
three weeks, students will become involved in four activities which will help them gather evidence for
your Extended Experimental Investigation. These steps include questioning and predicting, planning
and conducting, processing and analysing also reflecting and reporting. For further information on the
CBA you can go to the school website https://areyousas.weebly.com/

Kind Regards,

Jeanette McKenna.
