Assignment of Hydro Power Engineering

1. A steel penstock carries 32 m3 /sec of water under a head of 64 m, the velocity of water is
8 m/sec. The efficiency of joints is 90% and the allowable stress in penstock material is
100 kg/cm2 . Determine the following:
(a) Diameter of penstock. (b) Thickness of penstock
2. Determine the H.P. that can be developed from a hydroelectric power plant with the
following data
Catchment area of reservoir, A = 3x 103 sq. meter =3x 108 m2
Mean head, H = 40m
Annual average rainfall = 110cm = 1.1m
Efficiency of turbine ηt = 80% = 0.8
Efficiency of generator ηg = 85% = 0.85
Load factor = 45% = 0.45
w = Specific weight of water = 1000 kg/ m3
Assume that 25% of the rainfall is lost due to evaporation and 4% head lost in penstock.
3. The available discharge for a hydroelectric power plant is 320 m3 /sec under a head
of 28 meter. The turbine efficiency is 90 % and the generator is directly coupled to
the turbine. The frequency of generation is 50 cycles /sec. and number of poles used
are 26. Find the number of machines required when,
(a) A Francis turbine with a specific speed of 280 is used
(b) A Kaplan turbine with a specific speed of 500 is used.
4. For a river having a discharge of 230 liters/sec and available head of 43 meters.
(a) Calculate specific speed of turbine. (b) Suggest type of turbine for the river.
Take efficiency of turbine as 80% and speed as 480 RPM
5. For a hydro-electric power station the following data is available
Head =380m.
Discharge = 4 m3/sec.
Efficiency of turbine = 80%
Generator frequency = 50 cycle/sec
Determine the following:
(a) Output (b) Type of turbine and (c) Speed of turbine.
