According to PPST, quality teachers in the Philippines need to possess the following

characteristics:

1. CONTENT KNOWLEDGE AND PEDAGOGY – it is the combination of both content


and pedagogy. A teacher needs to be more than knowledgeable on his/her subject matter
wherein they can teach specific subjects clearly and effectively. It requires an
understanding of where students are coming from in reference to the subject being taught.
That's because, in order to teach the material well, teachers have to know what the
students can contribute based in their own knowledge on that subject matter.  The used
also of Mother Tongue, Filipino and English in teaching and learning is a must for it
represents proficiency in teaching. They can also use different strategies, skills and
research to achieve a desirable learning outcome.

2. LEARNING ENVIRONMENT - a teacher should also maintained a learning focused


environment. It means that a teacher should prepare a safe and positive learning
environment because it can have rapport between a teacher and his or her students. When
the students understand that their teacher cares about them and wants them to do well,
students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and taking risks in order to
learn something new. By modeling and encouraging a safe environment and purposeful
rules, students feel motivated to do the right thing and help one another. It is important
for teachers to put an emphasis on intrinsic motivation in the classroom to keep students
interested and invested in their own learning goals.

3. DIVERSITY OF LEARNERS – it means that a teacher should respond student’s


diversity in terms of races, culture and beliefs. Respect should be given in order to
achieve diversity locally and globally. Diversity in the classroom helps students develop
social awareness which helps them appreciate different perspectives and draw stronger
conclusions. It helps students learn about other languages and cultures, encouraging them
to be interculturally sensitive.  

4. CURRICULUM AND PLANNING - a teacher should plan and design effective


instruction. It is a process concerned with making decisions about what to learn, why, and
how to organize the teaching and learning process taking into account existing curriculum
requirements and the resources available. Teacher should ensure that all students
experience a quality education appropriate to their needs in a changing world

5. ASSESSMENT AND REPORTING - is important to ensure that student needs are


being met. It combine to support students to achieve high standards and to provide the
basis for guiding further learning, as well as informing parents about their child’s
achievement.
6. COMMUNITY LINKAGES AND PROFESSIONAL ENGAGEMENT – it focuses
on the ideal that school activities are meaningfully linked to the experiences and
aspirations of the students in their homes and communities. It focuses on teachers efforts
directed at strengthening the links between school and community activities, particularly
as these links help in the attainment of curricular objectives.

7. PERSONAL GROWTH AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT – it emphasizes


the ideal that teacher’s value having high personal regard for the teaching profession,
concern for professional development, and continuous improvement as teachers. It
acknowledge that teachers require varied levels of support to improve classroom
competence and performance.
