Definition

Identity construction is self-awareness of observing and evaluating self-concept as a unit.

A person who has a strong sense of self-identity will see himself as different from others. In
other words, here is a person's social identity that helps shape the self-concept and allows that
person to place himself in a certain position in a complex network of social relationships.

Important Points Construction of identity:

Forms of identity can be classified as follows:

1) Cultural Identity

arises because a person is a member of a particular ethnic group. Includes learning about
and acceptance of traditions, traits, language, religion, and descent from a culture.

2) Social Identity

result of our membership in a culture. The types of groups include age, gender, work,
religion, social class and place. Social identity is an identity that is obtained through the
search and education process over a long period of time.

3) Personal Identity

based on the uniqueness of a person's personal characteristics. Cultural behavior, voice,

gestures, body parts, tone of voice, speech, color of clothing, and hair clippings show
characteristics of a person that are not shared by others.

Identity Construction Process:

1) Self Concept

defined as (a) a person's perception, belief, feeling, or attitude about himself, (b) the
quality of the individual's character about himself; and (c) a system of individual
meanings and views of others about themselves.

2. Social environment

This has a big impact on the identity of the individual. Because, through interactions with
the environment, he always constructs his identity like what he produces from
interactions with the surrounding social environment.

3.Group Influence

refers to one's feelings about oneself in relation to others and to society in general.
Identity is formed and changed by the process of socialization and in relationships with
other people or groups.
Perspective on Identity:

1) Social Psychology Approach

The social psychology approach assumes that the individual's life and behavior are not
alone, the individual is in a social environment, therefore the individual's personality is
shaped by the personality of the social environment.

2) Communication Perspective

emphasizes that the nature of self or group interactions (interactions carried out by an
individual and group interactions) is communicative. Identity is built through social
interaction and communication.

3) Critical Perspective

According to the contextual view, identity is formed in a context. Therefore, an identity

can only be understood in that context, for example historical, economic, political
contexts.
