Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title:
How to find places and geographic features in South Carolina on a map

Objectives:
· Students will be able to identify various types of maps, map features, and the purpose of
maps.
· Students will be able to identify and describe the geographic location of South Carolina
in relation to the rest of the United States through the use of various maps and geographic
tools.
State Standards:
· Standard 2: Utilize the college and career skills of a geographer to apply map skills and
draw conclusions about places in South Carolina and South Carolina’s place in the
surrounding region.

Context:
This lesson is for a 1st grade social studies block. Students have already had a quiz on different
big cities that are in South Carolina, now they are learning how to find them on a map, as well as
different geographic features that are around the cities. Students are also going to learn how to
point out where South Carolina is on a map of the United States, and learn what states border
South Carolina. It is important that students learn the cities and geography of their state, because
as we dive deeper into social studies this year, students will be learning about wars like the
revolutionary war and the civil war, and it is important for students to know where each city is
that we are going to be talking about.
Data:
For this lesson, students are going to be grouped into groups of 4 or 3 depending on the number
of students that are there that day. They will be grouped based on the last quiz they took, and
what letter grade they received, and whether they understood the content on their last quiz or not,
so that I can pay more attention to the groups of students that scored lower and did not quite
understand the material, while students that scored well can continue to work at a faster pace. In
this lesson, I am going to be collecting data at the end by having students turn in a paper map
that they created with a group, as well as a digital map that they created independently so that I
can see how well they worked in a group, and how well each student individually understood it.

Procedures:
Introduction (10 minutes):
Students will come into class, and I will already have a list of the needed materials on the board.
I will then ask students to recall some past cities in South Carolina that we talked about in
previous classes. I call on different students, and ask them to tell me a city that they remember us
talking about, and some facts that they remember about them. Then I will ask students if they
know of different geographic landforms that are in South Carolina. As students raise their hand
to answer I will ask them to tell me what they think it would look like on a map. Then I will pull
up the power point on different cities in South Carolina which is linked in the materials, and give
them a little more material, as well as teaching them the different features of a map like the key,
the label, how to label a capital, how to label a city, how to draw geographic features like
mountains, rivers, and lakes, and other features on a map. Then, students will be directed where
to go one will come work with the teacher, one group will go to collaborative learning, and the
other group will go to the independent digital part, and students will continue learning.
Teacher Directed (20 minutes):
Students will be working with me in this section. They will have two handouts of maps
given to them, one that is completely blank for them to draw geographic features of the state on,
and another map with the counties outlined where students will fill in the names of the counties
as they watch the video. Students will first watch a video of different landforms in South
Carolina and it also contains some other interesting facts about the states. Students will then be
directed to fill out the blank state of South Carolina with different geographic features that they
learn about like the lakes, rivers, mountains, beaches and oceans around South Carolina. Next,
students will watch a video on the different counties in South Carolina. Students will fill out the
worksheet that has the outlines of the counties by labeling each counties name, then I will tell
students some of the most important places in South Carolina which they will color in with a
crayon, and I will also teach them where the capital of the state is, and they will learn how to
label the capitol on a map.

Collaborative (20 minutes):

In this part of the lesson, students will work with their group to make a poster of the state
of South Carolina. They will have guidelines to follow, as well as a list of things and the counties
that they need to include on their map. They will need to include the counties of Charleston,
Richland, Greenville, York, Horry, and Lexington. They also will need to include some
important cities like Greenville, Columbia, Myrtle Beach, Charleston, and Rock Hill. Students
also need to include the states that are bordering South Carolina, as well as the ocean that it
borders. Then students need to include ALL geographic features that they have learned about
that are in the state. Students also need to have a key, as well as make sure that the capitol is
labeled correctly. Students will turn this in as a group, and it will be hung in the hallway for
everyone to see. The state of South Carolina will already be printed out onto the poster so that
students are not focused on drawing the state, but more focused on what to include in the state.

Independent Digital (20 minutes):

Students will be working independently on their iPads in this section. There will be a
blank map that is posted to google classroom for them to fill out all on their own. This is so I can
see if they truly learned and know the geography of the State. Students will use a writing app of
their choice to put the map of South Carolina into, then students will label three important
counties that they can recall, as well as the capitol and at least three geographic features of the
state. Students will need to include the title of the map as well as a key that tells me exactly what
is being labeled. Then students will turn this in for a participation grade. This is one of the ways
that I will be able to make sure students understand what they are learning, and that they fully
comprehend it without anyone else’s help.
Closure (10 minutes):
Students will come back together as a group. I will make sure that each person’s name is
on their group map poster, as well as make sure that each student turned in their digital map to
me through google classroom. Then I will have a conversation with the class, just asking
different students to speak out and tell me something new that they learned from this lesson
today. Then I will have a person from each group go hang their poster out in the hallway on our
bulletin board, and then we will play a kahoot game just so I can see who truly understands the
material.

Rationale:
· Multimedia1: Smart board, interactive PowerPoint
This is a piece of multimedia because it is an interactive lesson for students. Students are able to
come up to the board and physically label different places in South Carolina. It is also a review
of different places that we learned about in the last lesson, so they are prepared for the lesson that
they are about to learn about. This is good for students of all learning types because it includes
physical touch on the smartboard when moving labels to different parts of the map, as well as
physically drawing landforms on the map on the board. Also, the board is huge, and it is right at
the front of the room so even if students have poor eyesight, they will be able to see it. The smart
board includes multiple different types of learning styles to help all students learn.
· Multimedia 2: YouTube videos “maps of South Carolina” and “South Carolina State
counties for kids”
These two videos are both informational. One of them is a song about the different counties in
South Carolina and talks about each county for a few seconds. This is good for students,
especially younger ones because they enjoy learning through song because it is different.
Students have to fill out two different maps based on these videos, so it is a very hands on
activity. This is good because it has students looking and listening to a video, then putting the
information that they learn in the videos onto paper. It is three different ways to learn about the
material. The videos can also include closed captioning so if there is a student with a hearing
disability in the class, they are able to follow along with the videos still because of the closed
captioning.
· Multimedia 3: iPad, writing app
Students are using their iPad to individually fill out a map, with a list of criteria that it must
follow. This is good for students because they have already worked in a group and with the
teacher, now they are able to see what they truly know on their own. This is also good, because it
is another way of writing, but on an iPad, and kids tend to enjoy doing assignments more
whenever it is on an iPad or some kind of technological device. Students are able to have their
device right in front of them and they are able to write with their fingers on a writing app of their
choice. Then students will turn it into google classroom.
· Multimedia 4: Kahoot
Kahoot is a great tool to use for students in the classroom. It is a way to quiz students, but also a
way to have fun with your students. Students compete by time and whether they got the question
correct or not. Students are much more willing to engage and participate because they actually
enjoy the activity that they are doing. This is a great closing activity because it gives the teacher
data at the end to see who truly knows the material and who does not.
