Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: Where do I live? Part 2

Objectives:
Students will be able to identify what state they live in on a map.
Students will be able to describe where South Carolina is in the United States.
State Standards:
Standard 2- Utilize the college and career skills of a geographer to apply map skills and draw
conclusions about places in South Carolina and South Carolina’s place in the surrounding region.
1.G.2 Identify and describe the geographic location of South Carolina in relation to the
rest of the United States through the use of various maps and geographic tools.
Context:
This lesson is a 1st grade Geography lesson. I am teaching this because this is a crucial lesson to
help students begin developing their geography skills. These 2 specific objectives are very
important to help students learn within future lessons and eventually upper grades. What comes
before this lesson is a lesson on where they live in general. The town, county, part of the state,
and then the state. This will be combined with a lesson with maps and how to use maps. The
lesson and the knowledge of where exactly they live will help them identify what state the live in
and how to describe it in comparison to other states in the United States. The map skills will help
a lot as well. The next lesson after this will be talking about, identifying, and differentiating the
rural, suburban, and urban areas within South Carolina. After talking about where they live and
how to use maps, these skills will be crucial in identifying what state they live in on a map and
where South Carolina is in the United States. This lesson is crucial for the next lesson as well as
it will help students use maps and prior knowledge to learn where the rural, suburban, and urban
areas of South Carolina are.
Data: How will students be grouped in this lesson? What hypothetical data will these groupings
be based on? How will data be collected in this lesson for future groupings and teaching?
Students will be grouped by using the randomized grouping generator on Class Dojo. The data is
randomized so it will hopefully mix students into groups where in each group there are students
with low, middle, and high understandings of the material. I will be using an Exit ticket to help
group for our next lesson.
Materials: List all materials used (i.e. websites, apps, pencils, iPads, computers, worksheets,
diagrams, textbooks, etc.)

Procedures:
Introduction (10 minutes):
I will start the lesson by asking students to recall what we learned from last lesson. What town
are we in? The County? Part of the state? And of course the state. After students finish answering
I will pull up the video on the smart board. We will watch it and I will cut it at 2 minutes and 20
seconds. I will ask questions off the video like. Where is South Carolina in comparison to the
United States? What are the neighboring states? Etc. I will listen to the answers and go into more
detail in the next section.
Teacher Directed (10 minutes):
I will then pull up the picture of the Southeast map on the smart board. I will then explain what
states are in the Southeast and show them exactly the states that neighbor South Carolina. I will
show them the shape of South Carolina as well. I will answer any questions as needed and pull
up additional maps as need as well such as a full map of the US.
Collaborative (10 minutes):
I will break students up into their random groups from Class Dojo. I will tell the, the app Geo
Touch that is downloaded already to pull that up and click on South Carolina. The app has a mini
lesson and I want students to have only 2 iPads out per table so they can share and collab on the
results in the mini lesson
Independent Digital (10 minutes):
I will then tell students to open Class Dojo on their individual iPads so they can do the
digital worksheet(pictured above) that they can fill out and turn in online. I will be walking
around to assist them if needed be. The worksheet is quite simple that incorporates things as
location and state capital from the collaborative and teacher lead portions of the lesson.

Closure (5 minutes):
I will write on the smart board 2 questions; What is the state capital of SC? And What
Region is SC located in? I will distribute the post its and have them turn it in in a bin in the front
of the room after they answer that. I will have them write their names on the post it and I will use
the data from those responses to see how to pair groups for the next lesson

Rationale: You must have at least two paragraphs (one for each mandatory piece of
multimedia)
Class Dojo:
This tool is very crucial for our lesson. It is like google classroom where everything is
located, and each student is enrolled on it. It will be crucial for group making, retrieving
the worksheet, and submitting their work in the end. This is a great tool for incentives
also as at this point their “monster eggs” from using Class Dojo regularly are starting to
hatch and submitting their work will help them do that. I like this piece specifically
because it is quite simple for both parties to use including parents. I have used this before
in my class.
Geo Touch:
This tool is really helpful for students to be able to explore a digital map and getting
responses when they touch on different places. It is great to see their reactions to the mini lessons
each state has when you click on it the right way. This app is also great to use in pairs as it shows
patience and other qualities students must have when it comes to sharing and they get the
educational benefit of learning about states at the same time.
