Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: North America Geography and Culture

Objectives:
Students will be able to identify select North American physical systems and human
characteristics of places.
Students will be able to explain North America’s current human population distributions and
patterns and use geographic models to compare the conditions driving migration and
demographic change.
State Standards:
7.5.3. HS Explain North America’s current human population distributions and patterns and use
geographic models to compare the conditions driving migration and demographic change.

Context:
I think that it is important for students to know the basic geography of the country that they live
in. Before we go into deep detail about the regions and the culture of our country, we will see
what the students already know prior to the unit to get a better understand of what we need to go
over more in detail and what we can possibly skip if the students already know about it. Previous
knowledge students could bring to this lesson could be already knowing the basic regions of
North America. After this unit we will than go into the geography of other countries and their
culture. North America is a geographically diverse continent with a variety of physical features
and social structures. The physical and cultural regional conditions create unique North
American landscapes, an understanding of which lays the foundation for learning about the
continent’s connection to the other peoples and places on Earth.
Data:
Students will be divided up into 5-6 people a group. These groups will be based on prior
knowledge and what students know more verses the students that might not know as much. The
data I will be collecting based on the survey that the students will be taking at the end of class to
see what they have learned.
Materials:
 Chromebook
 Teacher Laptop
 Projector

Procedures:
Introduction (10 minutes):
Students will get into class at bell and sit down in normal group tables. After we handle the
business side of the class like announcements and stuff that is due by the end of the week, we
will start to explain what we will be doing in class today. All students will take out their note
sheet in the notebook that they have been using for this history class. After this I will explain the
activity, we will be doing in class and take them step by step on what each station is about and
what exactly they will be doing.

Teacher Directed (10 minutes):

In this group I will be showing the group a series of maps and graphs of North America and the
territories( https://www.geographicguide.com/north-america-map.htm ). We will go over the
basic regions of the maps, and I will have the students lists the states in alphabetical order. This
will help the students remember the states in a fun easy way. After we go over the maps and
regions, we will play a game and the winners of each question will get
candy(https://embed.kahoot.it/f902d1da-6cd6-4544-925f-7631f855793e ).

Collaborative (10 minutes):

This section will be a group session that the students will work together to complete the
assignment.
There will be a list of answers in an envelope and then there is another envelope full of questions
the students must work together by correctly matching the answers to the question in the time
they are given. After the time is up mix up the answers and put them back into the envelope and
same with the questions.

Independent Digital (10 minutes):

In this section students will go on to their Chromebook and watch this video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCP1gGQaD4o

After watching this video, they will follow the instructions on the google classroom page and
complete the assignment. If needed they can complete the google form by using old notes and or
the notes on the google slides sheet I have posted.

Closure (10 minutes):

After time is up and all the groups and have visited every section, we will come together as a
class and see which station was the most benefitable. I will than give them an exit ticket and they
must complete it before they leave for class so I can get feedback on which group they liked the
most. At this time most of the students should have a very good understanding of what the North
America Geography Map looks like and should be able to name each state just by what it looks
like.

Rationale:
( https://www.geographicguide.com/north-america-map.htm ). This is multimedia
because I am going to explain the different regions in North America on into my students
and have them do an activity that helps the remember what they are looking at. This will
help the students learning because it might look like a complex map but once you look at
easy strategies and ways of reading it the students will never be able to look at the map
the same and they will think it’s the easiest thing to understand. I know this map is good
quality and has the right information because I used a very similar map when I was in
middle school and a lot of maps are hard to be wrong. This will help all learners because
it’s not just the way the website might look or what’s on it. It’s the way its explained and
how you can take such complex maps and turn them into a very understandable piece and
help the students learn not only faster but can intake a lot more knowledge than you
think.

(https://embed.kahoot.it/f902d1da-6cd6-4544-925f-7631f855793e .): This a multimedia

game that students can use to learn in a more fun manner. Every teacher knows exactly
what Kah9oot is and how it works. It is a very simple and fun game to use in the
classroom. It can be used for test prep or even just something to do that gets the whole
class more involved. Most of the time you have to create a game for the unit you are
teaching but sometimes you will get lucky and there will be games created already and all
you have to do is copy the link and share it with your class.
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCP1gGQaD4o). This is another piece of
multimedia that I thought would be helpful for the students to be able to listen and
watch a quick but easy to understand video on the North American geography. Not only
is it a little silly but the overall point of it will benefit you when you’re trying to
remember the regions of North America.
