Millicent Atkins School of Education: Common Lesson Plan Template

Teacher Candidate Name: Breanna Fuehrer

Grade Level: 3rd
Subject: Social Studies
Date: 10/14/2020
PLANNING
List the Common Core/State Standard(s) to be addressed in this lesson.

 CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.3.7 Use information gained from illustrations (e.g., maps, photographs) and the words
in a text to demonstrate understanding of the text (e.g., where, when, why, and how key events occur).

List the Rationale (cite theories or theorists):

 According to Vygotsky, children learn best through their social interactions with their teachers and peers and
should be encouraged to share their ideas as well as listen to other’s.
 Vygotsky believed that children learn best with scaffolding so in this lesson I will assist the students in
understanding key terms like landform as well as what landforms are.

List the learning objective(s) to be addressed in this lesson (specific, measurable, attainable, timebound).
Use the following format: “Students will be able to…”

 Students will be able to locate landforms (mountains, desserts, and plateaus) on a map.
 Students will be able to differentiate between different types of landforms on a map.
 Students will be able to identify cities on a map
 Students will be able to use a compass on a map to answer questions.

Describe how the learning objective(s) and the learning outcomes is/are appropriate for the
age/developmental level of the students.

 The learning objectives are appropriate for this age level because students will learn to use a map, identify
landforms on a map, and differentiate between the types of landforms. Knowing this is age appropriate for
3rd graders because they will need to know how to use a map.

Describe the Classroom Demographics: (e.g., ethnicities; gender ratios; special needs, including those of
gifted students, those of students’ physical needs, and those due to cultural characteristics).

 9 total students – 4 girls 5 boys

 General education classroom
 1 student on an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) for a cognitive learning disorder

Describe your Knowledge of Students: (in terms of the whole class and individual students)
(e.g., language needs; approaches to learning; prior learning and experiences; academic
proficiencies/behavioral differences; areas of interest).

 ! student on an Individualized Learning Plan (IEP) for a cognitive learning disorder

The student will have an aid at his desk to assist him with understanding the questions on the worksheet.
I will give the student extra information about the landforms after teaching the lesson to the whole class to
ensure they understand the different between landforms on the map.
List the materials/resources you will need to teach the lesson.

 Smartboard
 Worksheet (9copies)
 Pencils
 Crayons (student’s choice)
 Colored pencils (student’s choice)

Technology
Describe the instructional and/or assistive technology that you plan to incorporate into the lesson and explain how it
will enhance instruction and student learning.

 Smart board – I will use it to show the students different types on landforms, while I explain each landfrom
to the students.

Accommodations: Base this on the information you provided for Classroom Demographics and
Knowledge of Students above.
Describe the accommodations/differentiation/modifications you will use to meet the needs of all learners
and accommodate differences in students’ learning, culture, language, etc. *

 I will have a schedule posted on the board of what the steps of the lesson are so the students know what we
will be doing.
 I will repeat/reword any response other students give to questions being asked, to make sure all student
hear and understand.

Pre-Assessment: Describe the instrument or process you will use to measure students’ level of
understanding toward the learning objective(s) prior to teaching the lesson.

 I will ask the students the following questions as a whole class and I will have them raise their hand if they
know the answer.
o Do you know what a mountain is?
o Do you know what a river is?
o Do you know what a dessert is?
o Do you know what a plateau is?
o Do you know what plains are?

 The answer to these questions will let me know how much the students know about the content area and
what I will need to give them more information on.

Pre-Assessment: Describe how the results of the pre-assessment (what the students have demonstrated
they know) will be used to design the lesson objectives, instruction, and post-assessment. (Include charts,
graphs if applicable)

Classroom Management
Identify the management and motivational strategies you will use to meet student behavioral/developmental needs
in order to keep students on task and actively engaged throughout the lesson.

 Callbacks
 Proximity
 Choral Reading
 Writing the steps to the assignment on the board

Implementation
“I Do”
(Teacher introduces lesson and models expected outcome(s) of learning objectives)
Describe what instructional strategies you will use to model/explain/demonstrate the knowledge and skills
required of the objective.

 Before I start the lesson, I will write the steps to the lesson on the board so the children know what
we will be doing.
 I will start by asking the students what they know about landforms.
 After listening to what they know about different landforms I will tell the students the definition of
landform “a natural feature of the earth’s surface”.
 Once we talk about what a landform is I will show them pictures on the smart board of different
landforms (mountains, plateaus, rivers, desserts, and pains) and tell them about the different
landforms. We will also discuss how much of the earth’s surface each landform makes up.
 After looking at pictures of the landforms I will show the children what the landforms look like on a
landform map similar to the one on the worksheet.

“We Do”
(Teacher engages students in guided practice)
Describe the learning activities you will use to provide students multiple opportunities to practice the skills and
content needed to meet the learning objective(s).

 After talking about landforms, I will hand out the worksheets to the students.
 When all of the students have their worksheets, I will have them choral read the directions with
me.
 After we read the direction I will write the directions I’m adding to the board, below the steps of
the lesson on the board.
 The directions I will add to the worksheet would be to color the landforms (rivers: blue, mountains:
orange, plateaus: purple, plains: green, desserts: yellow).
 After reading the directions I will put the worksheet up on the smartboard and I will have some of
the students come up to the board and find some of the landforms and color them on the smart
board so I know the whole class is on the same page.

“You Do”
(Students engage in independent practice)
Describe what the students will do to independently practice the knowledge and skills required by the lesson
objectives?

 After students identify and color some of the landforms on the worksheet I will ask if they have any
questions.
 After discussing their questions if they have any I will go over my expectations for the class for how
I want them to work and what I want them to do on the worksheet.
 Once I am done going over my expectations for working on their assignment, I will let them begin
working on their worksheet.

Lesson Closing
Describe how you will reemphasize the lesson objective(s) and any skills/content that were taught in an
interactive manner (whole/small group, etc.).
 When the students are done with their worksheets I will have them turn them in and then we will
fill out the map, on the smart board, as a class to make sure they understand how to find landforms
on a map.
Post-Assessment: APPENDIX: Include a blank copy of the lesson post-assessment you will use to measure
students’ level of understanding toward the learning objectives after teaching the lesson.
Analyze
Post Assessment: Based on the results of the Pre-and Post-Assessment, to what extent did students achieve the
learning goals/objective of the lesson? Cite examples from the lesson plan, assessments, and/or video.
If applicable, insert a table/chart/graph before your explanation.

 I think students met the learning objective because they could identify landforms on a map as were
able to answer questions about the map they used that they needed to identify cities, landforms
and directions on the map. They were able to improve their scores and answer the questions on
the post-assessment effectively in regards to the map and landforms.
Reflect
Reflect on your instructional strategies, interactions with students, and classroom management strategies. Describe
what went well and what areas you need to revise in the future. Cite examples (from video) that support your
conclusions.
Describe revisions that you could make if you were to teach this lesson again. Why would you make each revision?
Cite examples from the lesson plan, video and/or student work that would prompt revisions.
 Overall the lesson went really well
 The students did really well listening to the lesson, staying on task, and working on their assignment.
 The students asked questions and were polite when others were asking questions.
 I think my classroom management strategies went well because when I used a call back at the beginning of a
lesson they all responded and began paying attention to the lesson.
 Some changes I would make would be to slow down my instructions for the students and go over them a
few more times to make sure they understand them because some children seemed confused about the
directions. Another thing I would change if I was to do this lesson again would be to check in with each
student as they were working on the assignment because some struggles to know their directions on the
map because they weren’t on the worksheet, a different change I could make to the lesson would be to find
a different worksheet that had a more detailed map for the students so they could identify directions and
landforms better.
