PLANNING
List the Common Core/State Standard(s) to be addressed in this lesson:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.1.C
Understand that words are separated by spaces in print.
List the Learning Objective(s) to be addressed in this lesson. Use the
following format: Students will be able to
Students will be able to write a sentence with appropriate space between
each word.
Describe how the objective is relevant to students lives.
Students must be able to write in order to be successful in school and
communicating with others. Writing is an important skill to master.
List the words relevant to the content area that you will either introduce
and/or review during your lesson.
Finger spaces, period, question mark
List the materials you will need to teach the lesson.
Pencils, paper, journals, Smart Board

ASSESSMENT
Pre-Assessment: Describe the instrument or process you will use to
measure students level of understanding toward the learning objective(s)
prior to teaching the lesson.
I will look at students journal entries in their Simmons Salutations from
the previous week to measure how well they do with spacing between
words and make copies of students who do well with spacing and those
who do not.
APPENDIX: Include a blank copy of the lesson pre-assessment. (if
applicable)
Is your pre-assessment included at the end of this lesson plan?
Describe the timeline as to when you plan to administer the preassessment?
(Recommended timeline is a minimum of two days prior to teaching your
lesson).
A week prior
Create and insert a table/chart/graph that shows the pre-assessment data
results. (if applicable)

Insert an image of your table/chart/graph here.

Describe how the results of the pre-assessment (what the students have
demonstrated they know) will be used to design the lesson objectives,
instruction, and post-assessment.

If students already space their writing appropriately, I will not spend as

much time focusing on this. If they are struggling, I will reiterate multiple
times the importance of using their spacing tool.
Post-Assessment: APPENDIX: Include a blank copy of the lesson post-assessment
you will use to measure students level of understanding toward the learning objectives after
teaching the lesson.

Is your post-assessment included at the end of this lesson plan?

APPENDIX: Include a copy of a Key/Product (completed by you, the teacher) which
provides a model of the desired outcome.

Is your key included at the end of this lesson plan?

TECHNOLOGY
Describe the instructional and/or assistive technology that you plan to
incorporate into the lesson to enhance instruction and student learning.
Smart Board

ACCOMMODATIONS
Describe the accommodations/differentiation/modifications you will use to
meet the needs of all learners and accommodate differences in students
learning, culture, language, etc. * Be sure that these accommodations are
based on what you identified/described in your contextual information
(Task I).
I will follow students IEPs.

MANAGEMENT

Identify the management and motivational strategies you will use to meet student
behavioral/developmental needs in order to keep students on task and actively engaged
throughout the lesson.

I will ask questions to keep students engaged. I will walk around the
classroom to make sure students stay on task. I will help with any
questions. I will tell students to give me a thumbs up when they are
ready to move on.

LESSON IMPLEMENTATION
I Do
(Teacher introduces lesson and models expected outcome of
learning objectives)
Describe how you will activate student interest and present the learning
objective in an engaging way (this is your lesson opening).
I will give students Space Kids, a tool used to put appropriate space
between each word. Each student will be able to pick their own Space Kid
from the table to keep in their crayon box and use during writing activities.
Describe how you will communicate (to students) how the objective is
relevant to their lives.
I will remind students that when writing, it is important to use spaces in
between words in order to make them successful writers. Writing is
something they will use many times in the future.
Describe what instructional strategies you will use to
model/explain/demonstrate the knowledge and skills required of the
objective. (cite theories/theorists)
I will use modeling when showing students how to use their Space Kids
and write sentences (Social Learning- Bandura). I will be a motivator for
students and serve as the more knowledgeable other, knowing students
need assistance in their Zone of Proximal Development (Vygotsky). I will
use the think-pair-share strategy in order to get students to interact with
their peers and learn from them. I will use Formative Assessment by asking
students to give me a thumbs up when they understand and are ready to
move on (Hattie).

Describe how you will check for students understanding before moving on
to guided practice.
I will ask students to give me a thumbs up if they understand what their
Space Kid is to be used for. If they dont, I will go over it again.
We Do
(Teacher engages students in guided practice)
Describe the learning activities you will use to provide students multiple opportunities to
practice the skills and content needed to meet the learning objective(s).

Students will be asked to keep their Space Kid in their crayon box. During
any writing activity throughout the next week and a half (journals,
Simmons Salutations, any other writing activity), they will be reminded to
get their Space Kid out. They will be guided by the teacher in their
writing, with constant reminders to use it between each word. The
sentences they write will be determined by the teacher and shown on the
overhead with step-by-step instructions. They will be asked to follow along
and use their spacing tool as the teacher does the same. They will be able
to practice with their Space Kid at least once a day with teacher
assistance for the week before the assessment takes place.
Describe how you will check for students understanding before moving on to independent
practice.

I will walk around the classroom and make sure students are using their
spacing tool appropriately. If they arent, I will remind them that it is
important that they are using it to put spaces in their writing.
You Do
(Students engage in independent practice)
Describe what the students will do to independently practice the knowledge and skills
required by the lesson objectives? (this is the post-assessment)

Students will get out their Simmons Salutations journals and write the
sentences determined by the teacher (We are talking about Thanksgiving.
What are you thankful for?). Instead of being reminded to use their spacing
tool, the teacher will only write the sentence without any extra instruction
on spacing.
APPENDIX: Include a blank copy of your post-assessment.
Is your BLANK COPY of the post-assessment included at the end of this
lesson plan?
Lesson Closing
Describe how you will reemphasize the lesson objective and any
skills/content that were taught in an interactive manner (whole/small

group, etc.).
I will ask students what they can use to make sure they keep spaces
between words. I will have them tell the person next to them, and then as
a group they will tell me. The answer should be their Space Kids, or their
fingers is an acceptable answer as well.

ANALYZE
(This portion may only be done after the post assessment is
collected/scored.)
Describe the results of the Post-Assessment and be sure to address the following:
Students progress from pre-to-post assessment. (if applicable)
Factors that may have influenced the post assessment results.
How the results of the post assessment highlight what areas of the
lesson will require re-teaching (if any).
If applicable, insert a table/chart/graph (below) that shows the post-assessment data
results. If you used the same document for both the pre and post assessments, it is strongly
encouraged that you show the comparison.

Insert an image of your table/chart/graph here.

Description:

REFLECT
List and describe two things you feel you did well to plan, implement, or assess instruction
(successes).

I think that I related finger spacing to the students in an interesting way. By

giving them an actual tool that had an astronaut on it, they remembered
spacing more often. I also think that I did well with waiting for the students
to be ready before moving on in the lesson using formative assessment.
List and describe two things you feel were challenges during the planning, implementation
and/or assessment of the lesson.

It was difficult to keep all 24 Kindergarteners on task at all times. There

were behaviors I wasnt prepared for and should have handled differently. It
was also difficult to accurate assess the spacing in their writing since some
of them struggle with writing in general. Their words are not recognizable
at times so reading their journals was a different challenge in itself.
List and describe two ideas for redesign you would make if you were to teach this lesson
again.

If I taught this lesson again, I would take more time to walk around the
classroom to make sure that each student was doing exactly what they
should be. It was hard to instruct and keep students on task while moving
at the pace I should have been. I would also have them do more writing on
their own before trying to assess them so I knew they understood fully how
to use their spaces.
