Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: The Sun and Moon

Objectives:

Students will be able to use data from personal observations to describe, predict, and develop
models to exemplify how the appearance of the moon changes over time in a predictable pattern.

Students will be able to obtain and communicate information to describe how technology has
enabled the study of the Sun, the Moon, planets, and stars.

State Standards:

Standard 1.E.3: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the patterns of the Sun and the
Moon and the Sun’s effect on Earth.

Context: I am teaching this lesson because students see the sun every day and most do not
understand how they actually work. They larger unit before this would be talking about the
Earth and all organisms that live upon it. By talking about them first we can then discuss how
the sun and moon affect them. They will know that the sun is a star and the moon has different
phases it goes through. The next larger unit we would talk about is the planets in the solar
system. I am teaching them that Earth, the sun and the moon are not the only things in the sky.
Data: Students will be grouped in 4 sets of 5. These groups will have a mixture of high
performing students, middle performing and low performing students so they can help each
other grow and me more engaged. I will take the grades from each individual group and see how
each student improved or did not improve. I will also talk to each groupmate and ask did they
work well with their group and if they felt more comfortable learning with them.
Materials: List all materials used (i.e. websites, apps, pencils, iPads, computers, worksheets,
diagrams, textbooks, etc.)

Detailed paragraphs from here on down.

Procedures:
Introduction (20 minutes): During the introduction I will explain the objectives and
standard to the students so they have in mind what they will be learning. Then I will give them
the chance to tell me what they already know and discuss it a little to get them excited and ready
to learn. Giving the students the opportunity to talk and discuss what they already know gives
them a sense of independence and readiness.
Teacher Directed (30 minutes): Now we will talk more about the lesson in greater detail.
We will start by reading in their science book about the sun and moon phases while they
highlight and take notes. I will explain to them how important it is for them to take notes, so they
have something to go back and look at instead of having to remember everything, which is
difficult for young children. I will also let them read from sections as well, so everyone stays
engaged.

Collaborative (30 minutes): During collaboration period, I will put The Sun- Educational
Video for Kid on the Smart Promethean Board for every student to view. I will explain to them
what the video will intel and also encourage them to take notes to view later. After the video is
over we will talk about it as a class to make sure every student got an understanding of the
material.

Independent Digital (30 minutes): During this time, I will have the students all download
the Moon Phase app. Then I will explain to them that they will be exploring the app and writing
down things they see interesting and would like to talk more about. Also, they will draw small
pictures of thing they see on the application.

Closure (20 minutes): During the closure students will have the opportunity to shar what
they learned. we will proceed group by group and allow each student to express how they felt
about the lesson. After all students have gone, I will ask what they feel could have been done
different to make the lesson better and also what they want to learn more about. They will
receive the coloring sheet at the end of all discussion to have a calm closing to their learning
experience. The coloring sheet will be composted of a picture of the sun and the moon and their
names written underneath.

Rationale: You must have at least two paragraphs (one for each mandatory piece of
multimedia)
(Multimedia 1= The Moon Phase- Lunar Calendar): It is piece of multimedia because
students will be able to further their technology use by navigating the application It
supports student learning and the standards and objectives by explaining what the moon
phases are and how they change daily. I know it is high quality because the information
is correct and allows the students to navigate and see the changes happening and why
they are. I do feel that this is an app that can be used by all students. No matter their
disability they can learn how to navigate the app and enjoy it.

(Multimedia 2= The Sun- Educational Video for Kids): It is a piece of multimedia

because students are able to watch, listen and/or read it on their computers, iPad, or
other tablets. It supports the objectives and standards by teaching students what the sun
is and how it works. I know it is high quality because of the accurate information and the
details in representation. With it being on YouTube they are able to see, hear and read
what is going on in the video while it is playing.
