Multimedia: Audio or Video Lesson Idea

Lesson Idea Name: Moon Phases

Grade Level/Content Area: 4th grade/ Science
Content Standard Addressed:

S4E2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to model the effects of the position and motion of
the Earth and the moon in relation to the sun as observed from the Earth.

b. Develop a model based on observations to describe the repeating pattern of the phases of the moon (new,
crescent, quarter, gibbous, and full).
ISTE Technology Standard Addressed:  What would you like students to know and be
Knowledge Constructor 1.3.c able to do by the end of this lesson:
- Students curate information from digital I would like for students to be able to use the
resources using a variety of tools and provided technological resources to learn about
methods to create collections of artifacts that the phases of the moon. The Simpleshow Video

lesson should be able to match the picture of the
moon phase to what the label is by the end of
the lesson.

What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

I can collect and analyze the data to learn about the phases of the moon.
Selected Instructional Software Tool: Simpleshow Video Maker

Description of Software:
This software is an online video maker that allows for personal creation of explainer videos that has
a simple process to follow. You get to create a professional video that can be used to support your
lessons. Creators make a script that have visual elements that can be added, kept, or edited. Videos
are then published for the public or sent to students that can be downloaded on personal devices.

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply: (
☒ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the teacher's
direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the student and mostly practice based.
☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic of learning
and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The teacher facilitates the learning as
the students direct their own learning processes.

☐ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems and completing projects to
demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. (Note: This
objective could be reached by displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project
to the classroom blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.)
Lesson idea implementation:
The lesson begins the previous week on a Friday after the unit of the planets. Learning shifts to
learning about the 8 different phases of Earths very own moon. The learning target will be
introduced and repeated with students. Students will be asked to share what different moon phases
they are familiar with, and they can draw them on the board as well. This will allow for background
knowledge to be shared with the teacher. The teacher then shows the Simpleshow Video Maker that
was created. This introduces the topic of the Moon Phases and gives them an idea of what to look
for when collecting and analyzing their own data over the weekend. Students will then be given a
“Moon Phase Calendar” graphic organizer to draw what the moon likes to them from Friday,
Saturday, and Sunday night.

On Monday, the teacher begins the lesson with replaying the Simpleshow Video Maker to help students recall
the 8 different moon phases. Teacher will then ask students to share out what they observed about the moon
phases over the weekend. For repetition of topic, students will then be tasked to complete one of two online
Moon Phase matching games. Throughout the games, the teacher will be walking around to help students
who are stuck, guide them to rewatch the video, and be of any extra assistance. Students will then be tasked
to create their own Simpleshow Video. They have to include the 8 different moon phases with a visual and
audio. Each video will then be compiled into one long video for students to refer back to.
Managing student learning:
Students begin the lesson by being passive learners because they are absorbing information while sitting and
paying attention to the video. Active learning takes place when they have to analyze the moon phase over the
weekend as well matching the moon phases on the online game. Students are active learners when they
complete the moon phase matching game because they are working towards completion. They are given the
opportunity to have their completed video shown in a complied video be referred back to when needed.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Reflection:
Multiple means of representation are reached within my lesson because of the chosen software
used. Simpleshow Video Maker allows me to add visuals, subtitles, and audio that will help students
be engaged during the lesson. The visuals used in the video are great for students who are visual
learners. The subtitles added in the video reach a variety of students who are hearing impaired or
for auditory learners. Each part of the software is designed to help students learn in a fun engaging
way.
Reflection:
I feel as if I have created a lesson that allows for student creativity while being repetitious of content. They
are introduced to the video I created twice, and they have to complete and online moon phase game.
Students receive the necessary information to complete each task and are not left without any assistance. I
look forward to the overall implementation however I look forward to the videos that the fourth graders get
to create. I think that student creativity is my favorite part of teaching because each student is unique in their
own way.

Moon Phase Calendar Draw the current moon phase for each day of the month. You can use
news media or direct observation for this information. First fill in the month, year, and date. If
the drawing is from a direct observation, put a checkmark in the box.
