Lesson Idea

Lesson Idea Name: End of Unit Microsoft Sway Presentation

Grade Level/Content Area: 4th grade Science
Content Standard Addressed:
ESS1.A: THE UNIVERSE AND ITS STARS
ESS1.B: EARTH AND THE SOLAR SYSTEM
ISTE Technology Standard Addressed:  What would you like students to know and
be able to do by the end of this lesson: By
Knowledge Constructor - 1.3.c Students the end of this lesson, I would like students
curate information from digital resources to pull information about (the things they
using a variety of tools and methods to found the most interesting to learn about)
create collections of artifacts that the universe, stars, earth, and the solar
demonstrate meaningful connections or system and be able to create a Microsoft
conclusions. Sway that displays their knowledge.

What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea? The student learning goal for this
lesson idea is that students will utilize Microsoft Sway in their own creative way. I expect that
students will include images, videos, and their own audio to tell a digital story and display
their new knowledge.

How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply.

☐ Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

☐ Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.

Lesson idea implementation: Using Microsoft Sway for this lesson, I will introduce this end of
unit project as a Microsoft Sway, utilizing the features I would like them to utilize. I will have
the topics students can choose from (the universe, stars, Earth, and the solar system – one or
all topics can be chosen), the requirements, and any additional information. I will make
students aware of their goals by having them on one of the cards in the Sway. Students will
utilize the technology by applying their information, creating cards, adding images, adding
videos, and inserting their own voices to narrate their projects. As the teacher I will be
available for any and all questions, I think if this is the first time using this software with this
group of students, I would block out some time for them to get started so that I can be
available for them during this time. I will provide feedback to the students as they are
creating their projects as well as marking a rubric when they are presenting. I will conclude
this lesson with presentation day, because students will be in partners or groups if they
choose, and their voices will be recorded it will be a low-pressure environment. I hope that
this will help them to enjoy and learn from their peers and their peer’s gained knowledge.

Managing the technology/engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that
gets students actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts? How will you manage the
classroom behaviors on the technology: I will use Microsoft Sway in a way that is full of co-
use, I think that having students collaborate on a new software is very important. I will also
give students sufficient time blocks to work on this project so that they can complete all of
the requirements during class time. I will include a written rubric of sorts making sure that
students have achievable goals and measurable objectives prior to getting started on this
project.

representation project, I am happy with the utilization of Microsoft Sway. This software is
ideal for many students and for many different types of learners. I also believe that this tool
will enhance the learning experience for all students in the classroom because it can be so
uniquely made to fit them. Some students might prefer to make their own videos to put into
their project, some might love to add their voices, and some might like seeking great
information already made. Having these options gives students voice and choice in this
project. I think that this lesson is ideal in the UDL framework because it displays the action
and expression principle well. Students have multiple means of displaying their knowledge.

Reflecting on enhanced learning:

After designing this lesson idea, I feel that the activity I created will improve student learning
and confidence. I look forward to implementing Microsoft Sway with students, mainly
because they get the creative freedom, voice, and choice. I also think that this could be a tool
that students gravitate towards because of its simplicity.
