Lesson Idea Name: Day and Night observations

Grade Level/Content Area: Kindergarten Science
Content Standard Addressed: SKE1.b Obtain, evaluate, and communicate observations
about time patterns (day to night and night to day) and objects (sun, moon, stars) in the
day and night sky.
Develop a model to communicate the changes that occur in the sky during the day, as day
turns into night, during the nights and as night turns to day using pictures and words.

What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

I will understand the difference between day and night. I will give examples of what happens
during day and night using Sway.

How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply.

X Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

X Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.

Lesson idea implementation:

I plan for students to independently view the Sway I created entitled “When the Sun Met the
Moon,” and we will gather for a group discussion of what other observations students have
made about day and night. After a brief Sway walkthrough as a class, Students will then be
paired off into groups to work on a Sway of their own. Their first goal is selecting two
observations from the daytime and two observations from the nighttime to highlight in their
sway. They will then use the image searching feature to find images for their observations.
During this time, the teacher will be walking around helping wherever is necessary. Students
will also add captions of what their observations are. Students will have 15-20 minutes to
select their images and create their captions. When they are done, the teacher will be able to
access their creations because the students are signed into the same Microsoft student
account because they do not have individual school emails in Kindergarten. Feedback will be
verbally provided to students as the teacher checks in on each group. The lesson will be
concluded by a group discussion about how students felt using Sway.

Managing engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that gets students
actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts?

The students will work in pairs, so I plan for co-use and time-on-task with continued focus
on the learning goal to be used to maintain engagement. Students will work in pairs to
create their Sway, and they will have to focus on working with the new technology.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Sway supports all students because it provides clear images for every formatting option, so
students who may not be able to read the words are able to infer what the image means.
Sway supports the action and expression components of the UDL framework because
students are given the freedom to create and design their own presentations about their
personal observations.

Reflecting on enhanced learning:

I feel the activities will be beneficial in fostering independence and critical thinking in
students because they will have to work together to figure out their presentation before
asking the teacher for assistance. I look forward to implementing the paired work using Sway
because students will be designing a presentation using a productivity tool that will be
available to them as they mature. This lesson will provide them with a start for using
productivity tools.
