creation or communication. and express their knowledge using a model
such as an illustration.

What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

The goal for this lesson is to understand how the sky changes throughout the day and night
and to create a model or drawing showing what you observed and learned.

Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.

X Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of

learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

X Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.

Lesson idea implementation:

I will start the lesson by introducing the topic. I can ask the students what the sky looked like
last night before they went to bed, this morning when they came to school, and what objects
they often see in the sky. Then we will read the book Throughout the day, Throughout the
Sky. After reading the book, I will invite the kids to share their thoughts or anything new they
learned. We can then go outside and look at the sky and clouds and anything else we see.
Then I will introduce the student led/creative component by explaining the illustrations they
will be doing. They will get a paper with four sections and will make four small illustrations of
a morning sky, a night sky, a sunny day sky and a cloudy or rainy sky. This may be broken up
into two days so children can observe the night sky at home if they have the opportunity.
When this is done, we can create a PowerPoint slideshow with each child’s picture uploaded
on a slide with their first name on it. On the introduction slide, I can record all or a few of the
students together saying what they learned and did in the lesson. Finally, we can conclude by
watching the slideshow together and sending it to the parents/posting in the class
newsletter.

Managing the technology/engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that
gets students actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts? How will you manage the
classroom behaviors on the technology:
When reading the book, I can ask open-ended questions such as, “When do you usually see
the moon in the sky?” When we go outside, I can let students lead the conversation and talk
with each other about the story and what they see in the sky now. Once they have finished
their illustrations, I will have two or three students at a time come to the computer and I will
show them how I upload pictures on the PowerPoint. Doing this with a small number of
children will allow everyone to see how it works. The other students look at picture books or
do another activity so they are still engaged in the topic and not just waiting for their turn.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

The Ebook format supports the representation principle since it allows a larger visualization
for the students (The words and pictures will be bigger and easier to see on the screen). With
PowerPoint, I can also add subtitles in another language if I have an English Language
Learner. This can also help with learning to read, as kindergarten students start recognizing
more words and making connections to the pictures. In addition, between reading, going
outside and drawing, there is something to engage children of several different interests.

Reflecting on enhanced learning:

I believe the activities in the lesson will impact student learning because there are multiple
different activities, and by observation and expression, students will be more likely to fully
grasp the concept. I would look forward to seeing how each student's drawing turns out,
because even though they were taught the same lesson, they all have different ideas and
personalities that will show when they are given the opportunity to express themselves.
