Creating Dreamtime Stories

Standards Assessed:
SS6H4 Explain the impact of English colonization on current Aboriginal basic rights, health, literacy,
and language.
ISTE 1.6 Creative Communicator: Students communicate clearly and express themselves creatively for
a variety of purposes using the platforms, tools, styles, formats and digital media appropriate to their
goals.

Assessment:
Students will create a video recording of a dreamtime story of their own creation. This video will be
shared with the class and with their parents and be used as examples of what to do for future students.
This project will give students a deeper understanding into the thoughts and beliefs of Aboriginal
Australians. This will be assessed based on creativity and originality, as well as how similar the story
elements to their creation are to those of a dreamtime story.

Learner Objectives:
Students will produce an original story and video based on the dreamtime stories of the Aboriginal
Australians.

Time Frame:
This will take around Four days to complete, with an anticipatory set at the end of the day before starting the lesson.

The “hook” or Introduction:
 This video will be shown at the end of class before starting this lesson.
 This will provide students with an example of what they will eventually create.

Process:
Day 1:
 At the end of class, show this video.
 Explain that we will be spending the next few days learning about and creating our own stories.
Day 2:
 Present this Nearpod explaining what dreamtime stories are.
 Read through the presentation and have students take notes from the information slides
 During the presentation students will stop and respond to the short answer and fill in the blank questions.
 At the end of the presentation is a “Time to Climb” multiple choice assessment.
 With the time remaining in class, have students begin to write their own creations.
Day 3:
 Begin class by reviewing the elements of dreamtime stories.
 Students will independently write their stories.
 Have students submit their stories for feedback when they finish.
 If a student finishes their story, they may begin recording their accompanying video with Adobe Creative Cloud.
Day 4:
 Begin class by showing students this video.
 Work with students who have not finished their story in a small group
 As students finish their stories, they may begin to record on Adobe Creative Cloud.
Day 5:
 Students will have time to finish and submit their videos.
 As they finish, they may submit their videos, then work on homework for other classes.
